Chapter 8: Three's a Party
(POV: Pepper)
"What the heck was that?" Adam looked around. He heard it too.
"I think it sounded close by, let's go!" I told him, and we ran to where we heard the cry come from.
There, on the muddy ground behind a tree, sat a shivering Sarina. Her hands and face were pale from the cold air, and her eyes were wide. "Sarina!" Adam and I shouted simultaneously.
"Who are you? Wha? Where am I? Adam? Pepper?" Sarina asked, reaching out to Adam as he kneeled before her, myself at her side.
"You're at the graveyard Sarina, it's okay though, we got you," I comforted her, rubbing her back. Suddenly she let go of Adam and moved away, her eyes growing angry.
"I'm not that goddamn Sarina chick!" she shouted, sounding a lot more like Isabelle. I looked towards Adam for help, as he probably had a lot more experience with her than I did.
"Alright, Isabelle, we understand. Can Sarina come back over?" Adam asked, just as softly. He didn't even flinch when Isabelle shouted back.
"No! She can't!" she was growling, then she shook her head, blinking a few times.
"Adam, please make it stop!" Sarina was crying into her sweatshirt sleeve. The older brother reaches his arms around his little sister, holding her shaking form and telling her it would be okay. I felt like an intruder on a perfect relationship between two family members. I did this to Sarina, but I had to make it right.
Just as quickly as Sarina comes back, she leaves again, bringing out the aggressive Isabelle, who pushes Adam away and moves to run but I grab her arm. "Isabelle, we are your friends. We didn't mean to make you so upset," I told her.
For the first time, I saw Isabelle's expression soften, and suddenly she collapsed into my arms. I held her, calling for Sarina.
"Stay with me, Sarina!" I called to her. Adam helped me get her lying on the ground, placing his sweatshirt under her head.
Less than a minute later, Sarina came back to, but upon seeing us, she shied away, scrambling over to the tree. She had a different look on her face than before. It was different then Sarina, and Isabelle.
"Who... Who a-are you?" She stuttered under a shaky voice. Even Sarina didn't sound like that when she was scared. Was she still Isabelle, or was this something completely different.
Another personality?
Adam had an expression of confusion on his face as well. "It's us, Pepper and Adam," he whispered to her.
She shook her head a little. "I don't think I know you, get away from me!" she looked like she would dart away, but her weak legs wouldn't carry her far.
From my time with Sarina, I had never seen her, or even Isabelle, act like this before. There was something very different here. I don't think this is Isabelle or Sarina. I think this is a completely different girl entirely, and from how Adam's acting, I don't think he's ever met this third personality either.
"Who are you, then?" I asked her, softly, stepping forward to her.
She trembles, trying to move away more. "Mae," she whispered. Adam's eyes widen. This was a third personality, a new one that had just emerged. Thinking about it, it sounded a lot like the cry for help from earlier. It must have emerged before we saw her here, and that's why she keeps going back and forth.
"Okay, Mae, I know you're scared, but we are going to take you someplace safe, alright?" I told her, standing up straight and keeping my hands behind my back, almost like how one would treat a scared animal.
