I didn't really pay attnetion to what Mr. Davidson was saying, but I was looking down at my notebook. I just started doodling on the edges of it. "Ms. Jessica Anne Edwards?" I heard Mr. Davidson say. I looked up, noticing everyone in the classroom was staring at me.
"Yes Mr. Davidson?" I asked, setting my pencil down.
"Have you been paying attention?" I looked around, hoping maybe Jane would help me. Tell me a little bit about what he was talking about, but her head was facing forward, and she wouldn't look back at me.
"Yes." I lied straight through my teeth, wow, good going Jessica I thought to myself. First you dont do your homework, then you almost punch a guy in the face, and now you're lying to a teacher, what the hell is going on here?
"Then what did I just say?" He asked, setting the Romeo and Juliet book down on his desk. I looked at the cover and realized he was about thirty pages in considering we had just started the book, I thought back to when I used to be the good girl. The girl who always did my homework, who always told the truth, and never did anything wrong.
"Well you were reading from the book." I started situating myself in seat, looking him dead in the eyes. "It was when Romeo and Juliet first met, when they met at the Capulets house party." He looked impressed, he smiled and looked back down t grab his book. As he started walking around the room, reading that part, I looked back down and started doodling again. Yet again, I wasn't paying attention to what he was saying, I was thinking about Markus, and how inviting his smell, his eyes, and his smile was.
"Good job." I heard a voice say. I looked around to see if someone had turned around to look back at me and started talking to me. But no one was even remotely looking at me. "You know how to lie well. Itll just make it easier for you to fit in." FIt in?
"What are you talking about?" I asked out loud.
"Excuse me?" I heard Mr. Davidson ask, stopping in his place and looking back at me. I had to make up a lie, and quick.
"I thought I saw something outside." I lied. I guessed the voice was coming from inside my head, because no one else heard it. Mr. Davidson looked at me weirdly, but continued to read the story. That was really weird, I thought shaking my head. Just then, I heard the bell ring. I stood up, grabbing my stuff and feeling Jane come up behind me. "Wow, thanks Jane." I said, grabbing my pencil and throwing it into my bag.
"What are you talking about?" I heard her ask.
"You didn't even help me when Mr. Davidson asked me if I was paying attention." She said, looking at me strangely.
"Well I for one wasn't even paying attention... to anything going on... and I figured youd be the one who would be paying attention... considering you're the nerd." She said, adding the last part barely above a whisper. I couldn't believe she just called me that, and I knew she wasn't even joking.
"Really!? I cant believe you even went there!" I gasped.
"Well its true. I mean have you not noticed the fact that you dont have many friends, that you spend every single second of your waking life studying or doing your homework, and you never go out and hang out with the friends you do have." She sneered.
"What has gotten into you? I mean just this morning we were like sisters, and now all of a sudden were like strangers." I asked, as we walked out of the school building. Ever since Markus showed up, things have been getting weirder and weirder. I have been changing, I've heard noises, had strange dreams, not paying attention, lying, and even worse getting into random fights with the people I love over absolutely nothing. I stopped Jane, and turned in her direction. "Jane, completely ignore everything I just said." I told her, tears brimming around my eyes. "I know why everything weird has been happening." She looked at me, crossing her arms and shifting her weight to one side. "Its Markus. I mean ever since he showed up, things have been weird. And you cant tell me they havent." It looked like she gave it some thought before her eyes began opening ever so slightly.
"Yes. I mean when he popped up, its like weve been changing." She was looking down, but when she finished her sentence, she looked up at me. "Jess, I am so sorry about what I said. You are not a nerd."
"No, Jane I am sorry. I shouldn't have been so harsh on you. I should have been paying attention to the lesson."
"So are we still friends?" She asked, her voice bearly pleading with me. I nodded my head, and leaned in for a tight hug. "Good," I heard her laugh as we pulled away. "Because theres this party that were going to tonight."
"But Jane, you know I have homework and my mom would never let me go." I complained, walking to her car. As we hopped in she turned towards me.
"Just tell her you're staying the night at my house. I mean you've lied before, and its like you're a pro at it anyways." A small evil smile worked its way onto her face.
"Is that the only thing you ever have on your mind?" I asked, laughing. She turned the car on,
"Maybe." She joked while driving to my house. Once we got there, I jumped out of her car, and started walking backwards to the door. "See you tonight!" She shouted out the window. I rolled my eyes, and began turning around before she shouted, "Oh, and wear something hot!" She said, pointing at me and eyeballing me.
"Fine!" I said, throwing my hand in her direction, and opening the door and walking in. I walked up to my bedroom, and slipped out of my outfit and into a simple nightgown type thing my mother had bought me a couple years ago.
"Hey Jess." I heard my brother shout from downstairs.
"What!?" I shouted back, still going through my closet. I listened as he ran upstairs to my bedroom, and threw my door open.
"Jane called me and told me to make sure you dont back out of the party plans." He said, bouncing on my bed. "I cant believe you're even going to a party, I mean, mom would kill you. And you would never go against moms wishes." He said, still starring up at me. I rolled my eyes at him, all I wanted was him gone, to just leave me alone. If I was going against moms wishes then I dont want him in here while I do it.
"Go away!" I said, pushing him towards my door.
"But, I want to go." He whined, looking back at me.
"How about this. Ill let you go, if one, you dont tell mom, and two, you get the heck out of my room!"
"Deal!" He said, walking farther away from what my arm would reach, causing me to fall forward. As I stood up, I cursed under my breath,
"Asshole." Great, I thought to myself, now Im cussing at my own brother. I jumped up, and shut my door, this time locking it. I walked back over to my closet and started going through my horrible clothse. "No, no, nope, definetly not." I said, throwing the clothes I didn't want to wear on my bed. I went with a simple tanktop, skinny jeans, my makeup, and jewlery. I settled with white high heels, as I looked into the mirror, I thought I was cute.
"Jess!" My brother yelled yet again. I opened my bedroom door, and looked out.
"What?"
"Janes here! She said hurry up and get down there." I rolled my eyes, grabbed my purse, and walked down stairs. I made sure to go quite slow because I still wasn't used to wearing heels yet. As I got down to the front door, Jane turned towards me, her eyes wide open.
"You look hot!" She laughed. Shaking my head, Brad and I got into her car and she drove us to the party.
