What I managed to get out the little girl, was that her nick name was Dree. I didn't know what it could be short for. Though Chandler got out of his shocked faze and looked at me weirdly.
"If I knew you weren't going to to be greatful that I saved you then I wouldn't have saved you." I mumbled loud enough for him to hear.
"Well I'm just confused. I'm glad that you saved me. Thank you for that, but I don't know how you did it."
"Well there would be a lot of things you would confused about if I told you my life story. But, I can't because the shore of California is near. Plus I barely know you." I said.
"Okay well, I still want to know." He said stubbornly.
"Anyways were are you headed?" I said desperate to change the topic.
"I'm going to San Diego."
"Great. I'm going there too." Our thoughts soon enveloped us both. Mostly thinking about the inflamed plane.
"What are we going to do with Dree?" He said breaking the silence after awhile.
"I'll just take her with me. I can adopt her as my legal sibling or something. I'll think of it when I get to my uncle's place." I said thinking out loud.
Once we reached the shore, people looked at us weirdly, after all we were on the beach. I paid them no mind and helped Dree and my luggage out the boat. I quickly deactivated the device so it went back to being a small palm sized box. Chandler looked at it fascinated, and Dree looked amazed. I just smirked and walked away from the beach and on the sidewalks. I quickly hailed a cab and loaded all of us in with our luggage.
By the time we hit San Diego, Chandler and I had to go our separate ways. When I reached my Uncle's building were his apartment is, Chandler was there.
"Seriously? Did you follow me?" I questioned him.
"No I got lost and then figured out that my apartment is in this building. "
"Great." I muttered. I rushed past him and went into the elevator with Dree close behind me. Once we actually got to my Uncle's apartment, the door was locked. I found the key wedged into a whole near the floor, and opened the door. He wasn't there. I dragged in all my bags and inside along with Dree. Once we both had long showers and a change of clothes. We went looking for food. I started cooking up some baked chicken and rice. I looked behind me and there was Dree sitting at the kitchen table watching me cook. I smiled at her, she looked cute in my sweater, which was a couple sizes to big for her. When I finished dinner, my uncle Raymond came home."Well, isn't this a surprise! What's up Jade! What are you doing here?" He said while hugging me. "And who's the cutie pie?" He gestured to Dree.
"It's a long story, but we can talk about it when we eat." I said. Once we got settled, I filled him in on everything. From being accused of being crazy to the ingredients I cooked the chicken with. You could say that my uncle and I are close.
"So your fathers invention actually worked?"
"Is that what you got out of everything I just said?" I asked amused.
"Well no. But I'm surprised that your fathers invention worked. He looked more like a dreamer than an actual achiever. I thought he would fail miserably." He said looking around thoughtfully. "I told Tanya not to marry his sorry ass."
I cleared my voice and gestured to Dree. "First of all, watch your language there are children present. Second of all, if my mom and my dad's didn't marry, then you wouldn't be eating this bomb chicken." I said satisfied with my answer. "And yes, my dad's invention did work. He was a very dedicated inventor that achieved a lot and made that money."
He looked at me and gave me a look I couldn't read. "Although he and your mom made a beautiful creation, he left you at a very young and damaging age. I never liked him from the beginning. He always had that look that he never wanted to be were he was. I also don't like how he gave you one of his inventions when you were 6 years old." He said with a disapproving look.
"But if he didn't give me that invention then I would have been dead. Believe it or not it's not the first time I jumped from a plane. If it weren't for me your sister would be dead." I said smirking, then stopped when I remembered that I never told him that story before. "Ha ha I'm just kidding. Well I'm full so I should be going to bed." Hurriedly I put away Dree's and my dish's in the sink.
"Wait, we still have to discuss about you and Dree going to school. I can't home school you guys so you have to go to school. I refuse to have children in my home uneducated and ignorant."
"Okay well what school would we even go to?" I said interested.
"Central California high school, and Central California elementary school. Looks like your going to have a little sister. I can go get the legal papers tomorrow, and yes its that easy. I'm a lawyer after all." He said smirking.
"Right, well when would we have to start?"
"You can start next week. Since I'm such a cool uncle."
"Whatever ever you say weirdo." I said secretly happy.
I scooped up Dree and hugged her close. I'm glad my uncle picked up the vibes that I shared with Dree. I had to much heart to give up her big green eyes.
"Are you excited to be my new little sister?" I said to her.
She looked up at me, her eyes held no emotion, no hope, no satisfaction. Peering into her eyes I was terrified. This little girl with big green eyes scared the shit out of me. The reason being that I have never once in my life ever seen a child so hopeless.
At that moment I made it a goal to make her happy, and hopeful once again.
Though one thing I noticed was her death date settled back to one date. Again I looked away before I could see the death date. At least this date is longer than the last.
We walked my room, and set her down on my king sized bed. I always had a room here at my uncles, and because of that my stuff is always here. I didn't want Dree to be in a room by herself so I blew up an air mattress and let her sleep on my bed. When I tucked her in she still didn't show any emotion, so I just turned off the light. As soon as my eyes started to close I heard sniffles. I got up from the mattress and got in bed with Dree.
I held her close in my arms and rocked her gently back to sleep. Her tears dried in my shirt. As she slept she frowned, and another tear slipped under eyelids.
She was crying in her sleep. This child has seen to much already. If she sees more it'll break her. I'll die before that happens again.
