MARVEL POV
"Where do we go?" I ask, as we absent-mindedly trudge through the woodland. "Cato and Clove will stay at the lake."
"How will we kill them, Marvel?" Glimmer says, looking deep into my eyes. My heart melts whenever she looks at me like that. Her eyes tell me she's drawn me in forever and there's nothing I can do.
"I don't know. We still have that poison, remember?" I reply. "But we can go home together. So whatever happens, we will."
"I don't want to kill Clove. In fact, I don't want to kill anybody," she says weakly. "When Cato killed that little girl, I couldn't stand it. I'm glad we left, but I don't know if I can ever make it home."
"Of course you can. We both can."
Soon, we've reached the river. We'd seen parts of it during our endless cycle of walking and killing as a group, but we've found the real river now. It's a torrent of water rather than a trickle, gushing over rocks and plants, creating a roar.
And I can see a cave, a few metres away. We must be on the edge of the arena, and it looks well-hidden. So I point it out.
Glimmer looks at me like I have two heads. "A cave? You're serious?"
"Why not?"
"It's dark, and wet, and you never know what might be living in there!" she says.
"If something is, I can handle it. No other tributes will be here. We've been walking for hours, it's too far away from anything. Trust me on this one," I say, tiredness beginning to settle in my mind.
We walk a few more steps, and Glimmer lets out a sudden gasp and stops. I jolt around, my eyes peeled and darting over our surroundings. Rocks, plants, and trees in the distance.
"What?" I say, panic widening my eyes.
She's looking like she saw something, but there's nothing there. She shakes her head, puzzled. "Sorry. I swear I saw something move over on that rock, but I guess it was an animal or something."
"Let's get out of sight," I tell her, taking her hand which she allows me to do, and stumbling with her down to the cave.
Glimmer was right, it's dark and dank and wet, but it's empty. And if we sit right at the bottom of it, we'll be out of sight. I can tell she's turning her nose up at it, and it is a lot less picturesque than the lake, but at least it's safe.
I make my way down to the bottom, and set out the sleeping bags I've been lugging about all day, the weight toppling gratefully off my shoulders. My backpack hits the floor, and I follow it, sitting down on the thin fabric of the bag. Glimmer copies me, scooting up close. Even under the dirt and pain of the Games, she still feels familiar. She's a breath of fresh air when everything around us stinks of decay.
CLOVE POV
I'm sat, watching the lake absently. The water glitters with imposed iridescence, and the long grass is nodding gently in the wind. It could be beautiful.
It's around midday, or, at least I think it is. The sun is beating down but there's only a hint of warmth, especially between Cato and I. He's sat a few metres away from me, sharpening his sword, and we haven't spoken for hours.
Part of me still wants to leave. As awful as it is, as much as I know we should work together, part of me wonders if we couldn't still win together, no matter whether or not we're in an alliance. The announcement said two winners from the same District could be crowned. They didn't specify whether or not we had to stick together.
