KATNISS POV
My soft hunter's boots tread over the fallen leaves, crunching over them. I don't bother to be careful. Everything I knew was gone.
Glimmer killed Peeta. I remember it so clearly, the axe piercing his neck, his scream of pain. Everything I did for him, gone. That bright smile, those sparkling blue eyes, devoid of life because of me.
I thought I hated the Capitol before, but whatever I'm feeling now is indescribable. It's more than hate. And I see now, everything I didn't see before. Marvel and Glimmer were kids, with life and love, and I took that away from them. It's all my fault.
I almost don't want to kill Cato and Clove. Maybe they'd be lucky enough to get home. I know if I got there I'd be a spitting image of Haymitch. I'd ruin everyone even more than if I just died here.
"Promise me you'll try to win."
Prim. I promise.
CLOVE POV
Cato and I wait for whoever's left at the Cornucopia. I think this is where the final fight comes, but I have no idea what to think anymore. I rest my head on Cato's shoulder, and he strokes my hair as I pray it's Glimmer who'll walk out of those trees. The whole arena is silent, all life gone. Cato's not talking. I'm not talking. I almost don't want to win anymore.
Suddenely we hear a scream. Female.
"I'm so sorry," I whisper to Cato, although inside I'm glad it's Marvel who's gone.
A figure comes racing out of the trees. A female figure, and I search in the smoke for her flowing blonde hair but all I see is a dark braid, flopping along over that back that was on fire back when we were in the Capitol.
And then I know. Glimmer is dead.
My mouth drops open. She saved me, not only once, but twice, and I let her go. Glimmer, with her shining blonde hair and emerald eyes. Glimmer and Marvel, both gone. They would be together now, at least, and that's how they should be. Glimmer and Marvel had a love that you couldn't find in a lot of places. They were beautiful, and their love was beautiful. It protected them, kept them together when nothing else could.
"Clove!" Cato shouts from behind me, and I snap back to Earth. Katniss races behind me, taking a foothold on the Cornucopia and starting to climb. I notice the huge pack of mutts behind her and panic, rushing to the horn and following her up. Cato's already up there, waiting. I climb faster and higher but it's not quick enough. Something bites onto my leg, pain flashing up my body, making my vision blurr. I shake with fear, adrenaline pumping through my veins as I try to pull myself up, further and further.
"Cato!" I scream, fingertips gripping the hot metal. He responds fast, grabbing my hands and yanking me up onto the flat bit of the horn. I get on my knees and catch my breath, but when I look up it's not Cato that saved me.
It's Katniss.
The Girl on Fire has tears peppering her cheeks, her eyes vacant and expressionless. She sits in front of me, unprotected as I stare at her in astonishment.
"What-" I babble, but she cuts me off.
"Kill me," she says, her voice cracking.
I frown. "What?"
Her dark eyes water as she holds out a knife to me, desperation in her eyes. "Please," she murmurs.
"But-"
"I tried, Prim!" she yells, turning up to the sky. "I tried, and I'm sorry,"
I stare past her at Cato, who seems to be just as confused as I am.
Katniss' eyes are streaming now. She sniffs loudly. "I know you'll be broken. I know it's my fault, but you'll be okay. People come and go in life, right?" she says. I think it's to me.
She laughs, an awful, pain-ridden laugh. "They come and go!" she screams. "They come and go like Peeta!" she yells, facing the sky. "ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?" she shouts so loud I thought my eardrums would burst. She was trying to say something, but the words wouldn't come.
Katniss, the girl on fire who was so strong, sobs to me desperately. "Kill me," she croaks. "Please,"
I can't listen to her any more. And it's not out of spite that I send a knife into her neck, it's out of pity. The blade pierces her flesh and she falls to the ground where the phantom mutts are waiting. The cannon blasts and the sun appears.
