Spirit Animals

"Mike, you and Chester did a good job holding off the attacks last time so I want you two paired up again," Dave said. Mike looked over at Chester who gave him a slight nod.

"What do we have to do?" Mike asked quickly.

"You and Chester will be working in the square this time. The helicopter was just too dangerous last time. I want you two on the ground."

"Okay."

"I will take Brad and Joe and we'll lay low on the edges of the square," Dave said, "Ryan, you'll join Bono and Larry on the buildings to snipe. Once Ben and his people get back, they'll join you two in the square."

"Who is with my boys?" Chester asked immediately.

"Jeremy and Keith are guarding your sons. They won't be harmed and I'll send Shaun to guard them once he gets back as well."

Chester nodded and then he was quiet. Mike sighed softly as he looked down at the gauntlet. He couldn't believe he was actually wearing one. He smiled slightly and headed out of the room. He wondered how it would feel to transform into a wolf. He brushed his fingers over the button.

"You won't be able to do it now."

He turned around and saw Chester leaning against the wall. The former elite was looking healthier every day but his sleeves were rolled up, revealing the ugly brand from the corporal punishment.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean that you won't be able to transform in such a relaxed state. The blood needs to be pounding in your ears."

"Why?"

"Our inner animal only appears when we're angry or when we're afraid. When we're fighting for our lives, we will do anything to survive and that is when the animal appears."

"How did you channel it all the time so calmly?"

"Because I was angry. I believed that the rebels had killed my sons and I needed my revenge. It fueled me. I could transform whenever I needed to scare people. But it won't work like that now. I need to be in a battle to actually transform."

"How does it feel?"

"Like all the power you have is being multiplied by hundreds."

"Can you die? When you transform into an animal can you still die?"

"Yes," Chester said, "But the animal almost acts for you. It can see things you can't. It can sense things you can't. It will move on its own so it is not affected."

"That's amazing."

"It is."

Mike nodded and then brushed by the other man before heading into the back area of the Capitol building. It was a library. He had wanted to come in here and check it out but he hadn't gotten the time. He sighed softly and sat down in one of the chairs, reaching for the first book on the table. He saw the cover.

Horoscopes, Spirit Animals, Signs, and Fate.

He rolled his eyes and opened it. Of course he'd end up reading something stupid like this. He never believed in horoscopes but animals were always interesting. Besides, he was turning into a wolf now, maybe he could see what it meant. His eyes landed on the first page of animals.

The Fox represents cunning and tricks. It is sneaky but also loyal to its family. It is the animal that represents a strategist or someone who uses a lot of trickery. Protects the masses and is protected by the masses.
