Prisoners
The helicopter blades whirled through the air as they circled above Detroit. It was good to get out of the Capitol. There wasn't much more to there and Dave had it under control. They needed to start getting back out like Ben and his group had done before they were all killed with Charles Bennington. That name made him bristle with fury. He would probably say he hated that man more than he had hated Mark Wakefield. The copter took them to a safe distance before the six of them jumped out together and opened their parachutes. They all had their weapon as well as materials to start helping people out. People came out of their houses as they landed. He shrugged off his parachute as Keith stepped forward.
"Don't be afraid! We haven't come to harm anyone! We're from the rebellion, we're here to help. We have medics and supplies."
Larry looked around as people started hurrying out of their homes. Food wasn't a shortage, there was still plenty of it. They would just need supplies to get back into jobs and such. They'd need help rebuilding care centers. Brad and Joe stood next to him and Shaun stood up next to Keith. Ryan, or Ryu, as he'd come to start calling himself, was on his left. He was actually working with the man so they could get another medic with them. Having just one wouldn't be productive.
"Please, someone, my son is injured!" a woman called and he and Ryan headed over to her with their backpacks and supplies.
"Lead the way," he said quickly and they headed after her. Brad and Joe would be most likely helping people re-fortify their homes or shops. They walked past some other people who didn't look too good but there were only two of them, they couldn't cover a whole city.
"Do you know what the problem is, ma'am?" Ryu asked as they walked up the steps of the house.
"He was injured in one of the bombings right before you overtook."
"Is he bandaged?"
"As best we could," she nodded. Larry nodded and looked at Ryu.
"Go out and take a look at a few of the people we saw outside. They could need antibiotics if they're sick or if they're injured."
"You sure?"
"I got it," Larry assured him before following the woman up the stairs. They walked into a small room and Larry's eyes fell on the boy laying on the bed. The room was dusty, and definitely not a sterile environment for this kid.
"You need to clean this place up," he said quietly, "Wounds could get infected, might already be. Let's take a look at him."
He moved forward and gently undid the bandage around the boy's stomach. He could tell that this boy was probably not even a teenager yet. He checked the wound carefully. It looked as if a stray piece of debris had hit him and cut him rather deeply. Thankfully it didn't look like it had been infected. He would most likely just have to clean it and bandage it again.
"Yer lucky, not infected. You'll have to change the bandages every day though but it should be okay," he said before cleaning the cut and stitching it slowly back up. "What's yer name, lad?"
"Paul," the boy said quietly as he winced. Larry had to slow down just a little for a moment to make sure that he'd heard correctly. He nodded slightly and then finished his stitching job. He stood up and bandaged the cut slowly.
"It'll be fine," he said, "But you, don't exert yourself or do anything fun for a few days."
He smiled as the boy pouted, "Why not?"
"I knew a man that was very similar to you. He would always get himself into bad situations but he would always try and keep going even though he needed to rest. It never did him any good," Larry said patting the boy's shoulder, "So rest a few days and then ye can go and do what ye want."
He left some bandages for the mother and then headed out of the house. Ryu was outside the house handing out antibiotics and other medicines to the people on the streets that needed them. Larry nodded at him and then they headed back towards where they'd landed.
"Dave doesn't want us in cities for too long in case there are still people who would like to have us killed. We'll be leaving soon."
"Sounds good to me," Larry nodded, "Chicago next right?"
"Yep."
Brad and Joe were finishing up with one of the shops and Keith and Shaun were working with a couple other men to pave some of the street back together. They sat together on the edge of a fountain. It hadn't been destroyed.
"Hey!"
Larry frowned and turned around. A young man was running towards them.
"My brother's really sick, could you come take a look at him? I heard you were in town and we don't know what's wrong with him. It's about a block away."
"Settle down lad, we're coming," Larry said as he and Ryu got up and headed after the young man. They walked past some really run-down homes as they made their way towards the man's house. He couldn't help remembering the moment when they'd found out that one of Chester's sons had died. He sighed as he walked with Ryu. There were too many deaths in this war....why had Bono wanted to fight in this again? He'd only gone with the guy because he seemed like he had a plan. He and Adam both had discussed the idea of not accompanying the guy but in the end, they'd decided to go. And look where that got them. Adam was dead and he was alone. Scott pissed him off. If Scott could miraculously come back from the dead, then why couldn't his friends come back too? They hadn't killed innocent people.
"Here," the man said as they climbed up the steps and went into the house. Larry followed him and then Ryu came in after him. They were led to a room where a man was laying on a bed. Larry frowned as he moved over to him.
"What's been happening?"
"We don't know."
Larry glanced back at the man in the doorway. He stared at him for a second. Why did he seem familiar? And then he remembered him. He knew where he'd seen him before.
"Is there anything you'd be able to tell us about them?"
"They're killers. They'll hurt anyone to get what they want and the only way to stop them is to eliminate them. They tortured me.....hurt me...I'd done nothing wrong. I told them they could kill me if they wanted but they refused. They found it fun to see me suffer."
"You!" he snapped as he turned and pointed his gun at the man who had drawn his own. This was one of the men in league with Charles Bennington. "I didn't hesitate to shoot last time. What's yer deal?"
"It's a good thing you didn't shoot me. There's men outside the house that would shoot you down as soon as you left here without me."
"We could take him," Ryu breathed, "Hide out in the house and shoot them unexpectedly."
"They'd know. They could go after the others too," Larry muttered, "What do ye want from us?"
"A turnover."
"Dave wouldn't turn Chester over and that man was much more important than either of us, why would he give up the rule for us?"
"We'll have our ways."
He didn't remember much after that. The obviously not sick guy on the bed knocked them both out and when he woke up, he wasn't in the house anymore. He was in some really dark prison cell. He groaned and ran a hand through his hair.
"I'm telling you, it won't work."
"We might as well try, we're not getting out of here anytime soon. He's still out there somewhere."
"We don't even know that."
He slowly pushed himself up and leaned against a wall. He could barely see anything and the two voices had gone quiet. He glanced around again and saw an outline of a guy. He assumed it was Ryu.
"So who are you?" one of the mystery voices asked. Larry focused on the spot where the voice had come from.
"Does it matter much?"
"We want to know if we can trust you or not."
"Larry. My friend is Ryu," he said quickly.
"Larry? As in Larry Mullen Jr?"
"Should I be afraid ye know that?"
"No, no. You were a medic in the military. You were good."
"How do ye know that?"
"I was in the military too."
He frowned and then finally there was a hazy light filtering in through some area of their cell. He finally saw who his cellmates were and was surprised to see two women. The first who he assumed had been talking to him had long black hair and the second had short brown hair in a ponytail. He had a feeling he knew who these people were. He'd heard Bono's stories about the military and the girlfriend he had. And if that was her, then the other one must be her friend. He swallowed. It wasn't going to be easy to tell her that her husband was now gay for two men and her other love interest was dead. At least her friend would be happy that her husband was still alive. He didn't really know what to say to them now that he knew who they were. Once again, more people who were supposed to be dead came back, but not the people he cared about. How unfair was it to be left alive after a war?
"Well........."
"Why do they have you? What'd you do to piss them off?" the first woman asked. Larry swallowed. He might as well tell them.
"I'm with a group of rebels who took Wakefield down. Apparently he still has some followers."
Both of them started hitting him with questions. He had to answer them all. And finally they got to what they wanted to ask. He could tell.
"There was a man, with Wakefield, he was...."
"Under a drug, we know," Larry nodded, "Chester's fine."
The woman sighed in relief and then the second one leaned forward.
"The leader of the rebellion, who was it?"
"Dave Farrell," he said with a small smile, "I'm assuming yer his wife?"
She nodded and the two women shared a smile. He swallowed.
"Talinda, I.....I was with Paul when we met up with Dave and the rebels. He passed," he said quietly. He could see it hurt her when he said it.
"How?"
"Saving your husband's life," Larry said quietly, "Though of course...."
He broke off. He didn't want to be mean to her but he couldn't help but think if she had just left the man for his friend instead, Bono wouldn't be dead. He wouldn't have saved Chester's life. But deep down he knew that the soldier would have. He was just that kind of guy.
"What's the deal with these guys?"
"Their working for Mark. They wanted to take over. They were planning on drugging both Dave and Chester," Linsey explained, "They thought we'd be their triggers. How did you save Chester?"
Oh shit fucking hell. He forgot that she would still care about him. He'd have to say that one of her sons was dead too. He swallowed and shook his head.
"Doesn't matter. We need a plan to get out of this. Everything can be explained later."
"You're right. So what do we do?"
"I have absolutely no fucking idea."
