I walked into my room and checked my phone. No text. I began to worry, but then I thought, maybe his parents were talking to him again. Maybe he forgot to text. I didn't tell him to text me but he usually did whenever he got home just to let me know he made it home okay. As I thought about it, I got anxious and decided to go to the kitchen to get something to eat, while walking up the stairs, I had gotten a phone call. It was an unknown number. I decided to answer it to find out it was Trevor's mother. She was crying. My heart dropped.
"Trevor was in a car accident were on our way to the hospital if you'd like to meet us there," Trevor's father said taking the phone away from his wife.
"I'll meet you there," I said. I hung up the phone and started bawling. My mom came running in.
"What happened? What's wrong?" she asked.
"We need to go to the hospital right now," I said even though all she could make out of that was 'hospital' and 'now'.
"Alright let's go," she said grabbing my arm and dragging me to the van.
I bawled the whole way to the hospital. I didn't know how it happened, or what the injuries were, but it still hurt.
When we got there, Trevor's parents were waiting at the doors. I ran up to Trevor's mom, Jody, and hugged her. My mother shook hands with both of them. We all walked to the waiting room in quiet. We sat there for what seemed like forever.
"Madison," the doctor had said as he walked into the room. Me, my mother, Jody, and Matt, Trevor's father, had all stood up.
"Just the parents of Trevor please," he had said. My mother and I sat back down as Matt and Jody walked towards the doctor.
The doctor was talking quietly. I stared at him the whole time. He would look at me once in awhile. Finally, when he was done talking to them, they came over to us. Jody had tears in her eyes. Matt was being strong.
"The doctor said he broke his left leg and he is currently in a coma, but he can still hear everyone who comes to visit him. He said Trevor can have visitors now. Do you mind, Dylan, if we go in to see him first and then we'll come and get you and then you can see him?" Jody said.
"I don't mind as long as I have a chance to see him," I told her.
She nodded and walked out of the room with Matt.
"He won't be able to play the rest of the basketball season. He probably won't be able to play sports the rest of his life," I told my mother.
"You never know dear. You never know," she said.
The doctor had come back into the room. I got up and walked over to him.
"Will he be able to play sports in the future?" I asked.
"Maybe, there's a slight chance he may be able to still play sports," he told me.
"Thank you. Do you know how this happened? I never got filled in on how he got here other than he was in a car accident," I told him.
"A semi-truck hit him head on. The driver of the semi was dozing off and went into Trevor's lane and I guess Trevor was in a state of shock and didn't know what to do. Trevor is lucky to be alive. If he had a smaller vehicle, he definitely wouldn't be alive right now. I guess you could say that his truck had saved him, but the truck is done for," he had told me.
"Thank you," I said walking away.
I went back to my mom and I had told her how it happened. We had waited for Jody and Matt to get back. Once they did, Jody took me to where he was. She opened the door for me and then she closed it.
Once I saw him, all the scars, all the bruising, I cried.
"I love you," I whispered to him. He moved his hand and grabbed mine. I remember the doctor saying something about him being able to hear us and being able to move his hands a little bit. With him moving his hand, it made me cry even more.
"I need you here, your family needs you here, and your friends need you here. Please be okay Trevor, please. I know you. I know you're strong. I know you can pull through this. I love you, Trevor. I want to be with you, forever and ever," I told him. He squeezed my hand and I squeezed his hand back.
"I'll see you tomorrow. Goodbye Trevor, I love you," I said as I walked out of the room.
I went back to the waiting room to find my parents and his talking.
"Mom, can we leave? As much as I'd like to stay, I need sleep," I said to my mother.
"Yeah, we can go," she answered. Before we left, I gave Jody and Matt a hug and told them it was nice to meet them and that I'd be coming back tomorrow to see him. Once we had gotten home, I crawled into bed. It was hard for me to get to sleep that night.
December 18th
The next morning, my mom didn't wake me up. Once I did get up, it was 9. School had started about an hour ago. I figured she wanted me to stay home but I wanted to go to school. I needed something to do to keep my mind off of Trevor. Once I was ready, I drove myself to school.
All the teachers knew why I was late and why Trevor wasn't there. The whole school knew. They were all cautious of me. Everyone was too scared to talk to me. They all figured I'd snap if they'd say the wrong thing. The only people who weren't afraid was Nikkey and Maddie. They treated me like nothing happened, and I was grateful for that.
The rest of the day went by fast. Practice was okay. It was better than any of the other practices we've had. I got a lot of hugs. After practice, I drove to the hospital. When I had gotten into Trevor's room, the doctor was in there.
"How's he doing?" I had asked.
"He's improving, a lot," he said.
"So, do you know when he'll wake up?" I asked.
"We don't know when, but the more people talk to him, it helps. It's all up to him when he wakes up," he explained.
"Oh," I replied.
"I'll leave you two alone," he said walking out of the room.
Once I heard the door shut, I sat down by him.
"Everyone at school seems so different without you there. It felt like everyone was staring at me, watching me, to see if I'd snap. I can't snap though, if I snap, I'd feel like I'm no help," I told him. I explained what happened and what I did that day.
"I love you, Trevor," I said walking out of the room.
