December 24th
It's been roughly a week since the accident. He's still in a coma. Things at school have gotten better. People seem to have forgotten he existed. I still visit him every day. And every day, I pray that he will wake up during the night, and it never happens.
Today was the last day we had of school for the year, well, not the school year, but the year. After today, we'd be on Christmas break until January. I started driving to school so I wouldn't have people staring at me on the bus. I had brought a blanket to school. All everyone was doing today was watching movies, so I figured, why not. The day went by fast. I had no practice for Christmas break.
"What do you want for Christmas?" my mother had asked me.
"Is that really a question you can ask without knowing what I'm going to say?" I replied.
"Honey, we all want Trevor to wake up, but only he can choose when he wakes up," she said.
"I know. What I don't know is what I want for Christmas. Just give me money and I'll go shopping for clothes.," I told her.
"Alright. Are you going to see Trevor today?"
"Yeah, I got him a Christmas present and wanted to bring it to the hospital so he could open it when he wakes up."
"Okay, drive safe."
"Always do."
I grabbed Trevor's present and left. Before I went to the hospital, I stopped at Subway. I was getting hungry and I wanted to eat. When I got into Trevor's room, I took off my jacket and grabbed the tie blanket I had made for Trevor. I sat down in one of the chairs next to his bed. I started eating and he had moved his hand. He moved his hand whenever he heard movement in his room to let people know if he was awake or not. I only ate half of my sandwich. I wrapped the rest of it back up and stuck it by my jacket. I sat down next to Trevor and told him about my day like usual. I told him that the only real present I want for Christmas is for him to wake up.
"I'll be back tomorrow. I love you, Trevor. Please wake up soon," I said as I left.
When I had gotten home, I had gotten a call from Jody. She wanted to know how Trevor was. Some days she couldn't make it to the hospital so she would call me to see how he was. I had told her that he was a lot better and that he should be waking up soon.
Once off the phone with her, I showered and got ready for bed. It didn't feel like Christmas at all. I stayed up late that night, praying that Trevor would wake up tomorrow.
December 25th
In the morning, my family had woken up and we opened our presents.
"Mom, I'm going to visit Trevor once I get all these presents put away," I told my mom as I made my way to my room.
I got down to my room, put all my stuff away, put my hair up in a bun, changed clothes, did my makeup, and left to see Trevor. Once I got there, Jody ran up to me with a big smile and tears coming out of her eyes.
"Hey, what's up? Why are you crying? Did something bad happen?" I asked getting worried.
"We all got the best gift for Christmas," she said, "Trevor wants to see you."
My eyes got big. I ran into his room freezing at the door when I saw him sitting up eating. The tears started running down my face automatically. It's like I couldn't control the tears.
"Trevor, I'm so happy you're awake," I said walking up to him giving him a hug.
"I'm happy I'm awake too. I've missed your face," he said giving me a kiss on the forehead.
"Did you open up your presents?" I asked him.
"I opened the ones from my parents. They said I should wait until you get here to open up yours," he replied.
" Open it!" I said grabbing my present and giving it to him.
He started opening it and he got a huge grin on his face.
"Tickets to a Timberwolves game?!" he exclaimed.
"Do you like them?"
"Like them? I love them! You're going with me right?"
"I'll have to see if I work that day or if I can get off for that day, but yes. That's why there's two tickets."
"You got a job? And you drive now? I missed a lot..."
"I got a job to keep me preoccupied and pay for gas. I always could drive. I just never wanted to. I started driving the day after your accident so I wasn't bugging my mom for a ride to the hospital every day to see you."
"You came every day?"
"Yeah, of course I did. The doctor said that there was a chance you'd be able to hear everyone talk to you. Every day after school, practice, or work, I'd come here and tell you about my day."
"I heard you a couple of times."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Thank you for the tickets."
"No problem. So, do you know when you'll be able to go home?"
"They said depending on my recovery, next week."
"Oh, well, we'll have to do something special when you get home."
"Oh yeah? Like what?"
"Something, fun."
"I'm more than okay with doing something fun."
"I knew you would be."
We were kissing when Drew came walking in.
"Woah, ya'll still have clothes on right?" Drew said.
"Unfortunately, yes," Trevor said as I scowled at him.
"Alright. Your mom texted me and told me you were awake. So I thought I'd stop in and give you this," Drew said giving him a skinny rectangle box.
Trevor started opening it. It was a picture frame with 1 full slot and 3 empty slots. The only picture in it was of the basketball team. They were all in a line, a spot in the middle left open for Trevor. They were all holding out a basketball. At the bottom, it said, 'We'll keep our heads in the game, and you keep yourself on the bench cheering us on.' It was really nice. At the bottom of the picture frame, it said 'Family'.
"The team thought it'd be a good idea for a present. There's more than one slot so you can add pictures of things that mean a lot to you," Drew said.
"Thanks. Tell the team I say thanks to," Trevor said putting the frame back in the box and handing it to me so I could put it on the counter.
"Will do, see you next week at school hopefully," Drew said walking out of the room.
"That's a really good idea for a present. I wish I would have thought about it," I said.
"I like your gift, we can take a picture at the game and I'll put it in the frame," Trevor said.
"I'd like that," I said giving him a kiss. I laid down on the bed with him and I fell asleep as he played with my hair. I got woken up when the nurse came in.
"I'm going to go home. I still have to go to my dad's and celebrate Christmas with him. I'll come back late tomorrow. Do you want me to stop and see you when I get back?" I asked Trevor.
"No, you can wait until you've rested," he told me as I gave him a kiss.
"Okay, be good. I love you," I told him opening the door to walk out.
"I love you too Dylan, " he said. I smiled then closed the door behind me.
