I woke up with a beeping sound to my left. Opening my eyes slowly I took in my surroundings. I was in a bright room, a TV in front of me, a window to my left and I found the source of the beeping. Realization hit me. I was in the hospital. I tried to sit up, groaning in pain as I did. My ribs hurt, and my head too. I looked to my right and saw Justin looking at me from a chair next to my bed. He looked like he hadn't slept for days.
"You're awake" He said.
"Um, yeah"
"How are you feeling?"
"It's not my best day. How long have I been out?"
"Two days"
"What day is it today?"
"Sunday"
I nodded. "Why am I here?"
"I found you on the road when I was coming to pick you up"
That's when I remembered what happened. I inhaled quickly in surprise and hissed as it hurt my ribs.
"Are you okay?" Justin asked worriedly.
"Yeah, yeah, it's nothing" I waived it off.
"What happened?"
"I, uh" I didn't know what to tell him. He was going to be mad at me for not telling him that I kept receiving the texts.
Saving me from answering that question, the door flew open and my mum came rushing into the room.
"Oh, my baby, you're awake" She said, hugging me a little too tight.
"Mum, it hurts" I said, pulling her away.
"Oh, yes, I'm sorry" She smiled broadly. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine. How bad am I?"
"You have a few broken ribs, a concussion and a sprained ankle"
Ouch. I felt the broken ribs but my head wasn't giving me a bad time. Probably pain killers.
"So what happened?" Mum asked.
I was positive that I was not telling mum. Justin maybe. But mum? No way in hell "Well, I, uh, I don't remember" I lied quickly.
She bought it, her thoughts gave her away, but Justin didn't. He was determined to know what happened.
"Oh, well, the doctors say it's a normal thing and nothing to worry about" She raised from her seat. "I have to go now, I told your dad I'd pick him up when you woke up" She said with a sheepish smile.
I nodded. "Yeah, sure, go pick him up"
She exited the room and closed the door behind her.
"Okay, first of all—"
"It was him" I cut Justin off, hearing in his thoughts what he was about to say. "He ran into me with a car in the middle of the street"
"How did—"
"He kept sending me texts" Justin opened his mouth to say something but I spoke before he could. "He said not to tell you, or he'll hurt Mel. I couldn't tell you" I looked away.
"For how long?"
"Since I told you that. Remember that day when I went out and told you to call the cops if I wasn't back in half an hour?" He nodded. "Well, I went to see him"
"You did what?! Hailey, you can—"
"I know. But nothing happened. I got him talking, but it didn't make any sense. He said that I was the weak point and that he wanted revenge" I said. "Give me the purse" I told Justin, pointing towards it with my chin. "This morning" I said while I rummaged through my purse. "He left this at the door" I said as I took out the envelope.
