“Jake?” Stupid question, it was obviously him.
“Hailey!” He reached me and caught his breath. “Hey, you haven’t been answering to any of my calls”
“Oh, uh, yeah, I was at the hospital. Got hit by a car” I told him. “And then I had to change number”
“Why didn’t she ever told me she had a friend this gorgeous?! You don’t keep things like this from your best friend!” Mel’s thoughts echoed in my head. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.
“You could at least have called me” He huffed.
“I was in the hospital, what did you expect me to do?”
“To at least leave me a message? It’s not that difficult, you know”
I hated him when he put his arrogant attitude.
“I was in the hospital Jake!” I screamed, finally losing my temper.
“And I was planted on the date we had on Friday remember?!”
“She had a date with him and she didn’t tell me?! She is so gonna get it” Mel thoughts interrupted.
Really, Mel? Now wasn’t the best time.
“You made me go to that stupid date! You didn’t even give me a choice!”
He closed his eyes and inhaled loudly trough his nose. When he opened them again he looked pointedly at Mel.
“Um, Mel, do you mind if I talk with him in private?” I asked, turning to her.
She shook her head and gave me that look she gave me when she wanted to talk about something important. This was really a long night. And I needed to get home as soon as possible. He could be anywhere.
He crossed the road, me following him, and walked a few meters down the street. Then he turned around and looked me directly into my eyes, his light blue eyes piercing into my green ones.
“Look Hailey, I’m sorry I snapped at you” He said, sincerity burning in his eyes. He put his hand on my shoulder, and I instantly felt tingles. “It was just that you didn’t show up at the date and I was really mad, and when I tried calling you, you didn’t even answer your phone!” I opened my mouth but he covered it with his hand “I’m not done talking” He said. “What I didn’t know is that you where at the hospital and that you got hit by a car. I’m sorry for being so stupid. You’re in all your right to hit me”
I pulled his hand away from my mouth and looked into his eyes. “I’m not going to hit you, although you deserve it” I half-smiled at him. “What about leaving all this in the past?” I suggested.
He took a step away from me and stretched out his right arm. “Hi, I’m Jake Monroe, nice to meet you. And you are?” He asked.
I smiled entirely at him. What a classic thing for him to do. “Hailey Williams. Nice to meet you too.” I took his hand and shook it.
“Your face looks familiar. Have I met you before?”
“No, I don’t think so. But you live around here, don’t you?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Then you must have seen me in the supermarket or something”
“Probably” He smiled at me. “You seem nice, I like you.” He said as we started walking towards Mel. “How about we exchange numbers? You know, just so I have one more number.” He winked at me.
“Fine with me. But don’t expect any call.” I said, taking out my phone and giving it to him.
“Here, write yours” He gave me his phone and I tipped in my number and saved it.
