Picture of Leigh on your right :)

I looked at the clothes Robin held out to me with a look of distaste, “You expect me to wear these? To school?” She glared at me and threw the plaid skirt and polo shirt at me. “Take it or leave it Leigh, I didn’t have time to put together an outfit for you.” I sighed and started to dress myself.

We had decided that I’d just go to school and avoid my mom as much as possible. Yeah it was a stupid plan, but it was all we could come up with in such short notice. Hopefully I’d think of something more permanent.

Anything was better than leaving though. So if I had to live with Carson and wear Robin’s clothes for the next month before my eighteenth birthday, then so be it.

I combed my hair into a simple ponytail and applied minimum make up, courtesy of Robin. I hurried down the stairs where Carson, Robin, and Mrs. Brinks sat. I cleared my throat, “Good morning” I said as I sat down and poured myself a bowl of cereal.

Only Robin looked up at me and sent me a sympathetic smile. Carson and his mom didn’t even acknowledge my presence. Carson was staring into his cereal like it had all of life’s answers while his mom blankly looked off into space while she smoked a cigarette. I frowned; I didn’t even know she smoked.

“Well, we should be going” Robin said breaking the awkward silence. I jumped up happily walking to the door. Any excuse to be away from that situation was a godsend, even if it was school.

Robin followed behind while Carson dragged his feet. We hopped into Carson’s jeep while he silently drove us to school. Robin was the first to jump out seeing as how she was late for a meeting for geeks I’m guessing.

I got out and waited for Carson. He jumped out and looked at me for a second before pulling me into his arms. I gasped, shocked at the sudden contact. I regained my composure and wrapped my arms around his waist while his arms encircled me head pushing my face into his broad chest.

“How could he do that to my mom Leigh? Everyone told her to leave him but she stayed with the cheating sonofabitch.” I just stayed quiet and held him. He squeezed me tighter, “It’s all his fault. If he hadn’t of been messing around with that slut, your dad would’ve have never gotten you.”

I pulled away and grabbed his face between my hands, “Listen to me, my dad was coming no matter what, if it weren’t for you, we’d still be looking over our shoulders all the time. You and the others saved me and my mom. So stop looking at all the bad that came out of this and look at the brightside.”

He nodded as I wiped the tears from his eyes. “You gonna be okay hun?” I asked softly. He nodded and through his arm around my shoulder, “Let’s get to class troublemaker” he said playfully. I laughed and walked into the building with him.

To say everyone stared at us as we walked in would be an understatement. They were gawking at us like we were aliens wielding axes and whips. I held Carson’s waist tighter for support. “What the hell are ya’ll looking at?” Carson barked. Everyone turned back to what they were doing. I smiled at him sending him a silent thanks, he nodded.

Everyone knew about my dad and Carson’s dad. We walked into first period and was greeted by the sub since Mr. Brinks was obviously fired. She scowled at our tardiness while the rest of the class stared openly at us.

I sighed and took my seat next to Robin and Carson sat behind me. I searched the room for Kyle and noticed he was in his original seat. Next to Hannah.

My eyes widened, I elbowed Robin and pointed at him, “What the hell is that?” I whisper yelled. She looked sympathetic, “I’m sorry, I saw them too, but he wouldn’t look me in the eye” I turned back at them and glared at the back of Kyle’s head.

I ripped out a page of my math textbook and crumpled it up. I launched it at Kyle as hard as I possibly could. The teacher who had seen the whole thing gasped while Kyle turned around, a sad look on his face.

“Yeah?” he asked as if he was doing nothing wrong. My jaw dropped, “Dude, why are you sitting over there and not here” I pointed at the vacant seat beside me.

“Excuse me” the sub said. I ignored her and so did Kyle.

He sighed, “It’s complicated Leigh” he said softly. I narrowed my eyes, “Just tell me”

“Excuse me!” the sub persisted. She was still ignored.

“Leigh just calm down and drop it ok?” Hannah piped up. I almost growled at her, “Mind your own fucking business Hannah before I break your next leg” I barked.

“Excuse me children!” the flustered teacher yelled. She was still ignored.

“Don’t you dare threaten me you bitch; it’s you and your dysfunctional family’s fault that I’m like this.” That was the last straw, before I knew it; I had launched myself at her and Kyle. I was just about to deliver a hard punch to her face when I was held in place.

I looked back to hit whoever was holding me and saw it was Carson. I immediately stopped struggling and shoved him off. I looked around and saw that the whole class was gawking at me.

I fixed my clothes that had become wrinkled in the fight. I picked up my bag and looked back at Kyle, “Just stay the hell away from me” I walked out of the classroom with Carson on my heels, Robin trailing behind.

I turned around and faced them as soon as I saw that they were following me, “Guys, I just wanna be alone for a while. I’ll call you guys tonight.” I turned the corner leaving them there and walked right out the front entrance of school. I had a lot of packing to do.
