Derek just sat behind me, holding me securely as I calmed down, reassuring me that I was okay. I sat there, still kind of hyperventilating, gripping his arms like I was terrified of him letting me go. I've never had a nightmare like that before, and it scared the hell out of me; I've never had to literally scream myself awake before. Honestly, I had no idea that Derek even knew what to do once he got in here, or even had a clue as to why I was screaming in the first place. Speaking of Derek...why was he here tonight?
I shifted my gaze to see his moonlight illuminated face and twinkling eyes. "W-why are you here, Derek?" I asked quietly.
He gave me a confused look. "I've been here for three days, watching over you while your dad was at work."
Now it was my turn to give him a confused look. "Three days?"
"Yeah; you were screaming last night, just like you did tonight, even though you were fine the first night back from the hospital."
My eyes widened. "I was actually in the hospital?" I said it louder than I wanted to.
"You don't remember?"
"Oh, I remember; but I-I didn't think it actually happened."
"So, you know why you were in there then?"
I thought for a second, then wrenched myself out of his grip, standing up, and started pacing back and forth, pulling on my hair as I began panicking again.
"Elijah?"
"Y-you mean to tell me that I actually might have those diseases?"
"Yeah,"
My anxiety spiked even more.
"Why are you freaking out so much about this?"
I stopped pacing and pulling on my hair to look at him. "My mom had frontotemporal dementia."
"Okay?"
"There came a point where she had forgotten me; like, literally forgot me- she had no idea who I was. I-it shattered me because the only person who ever really understood me had completely forgotten who I was." Tears pricked the corners of my eyes at the memory of my mom; my anxiety began dissipating.
"I thought your mom was fine?"
"My mom died eight years ago."
"No; she's living with you right now. I saw her just a couple weeks ago."
"That was my step mom, and...s-she abandoned me last week." A tear betrayed me and rolled down my cheek.
"I'm sorry." He said sympathetically.
"Forget about it." I said quietly, turning to walk to the window and gaze outside. After a moment, I heard footsteps approaching; I wheeled- paranoid for some reason- and came face-to-face with Derek, who stood close to me. I had to crane my neck slightly to look up at him, and I jumped slightly when he put his hands on my hips.
He just stared at me, and I felt extremely vulnerable.
"D-Derek?" I said.
He leaned in, and I went rigid, grabbing for the window sill for support when our lips connected. After a few seconds, he pulled away slightly, and I looked at him in confusion and slight fear of where this might go.
"Your dad has the night shift tonight." He informed me.
My anxiety kicked in again, but I froze when his soft, warm lips made contact with my neck. As he kissed several places on my neck, my breathing became uneven and gradually sped up. I accidentally moaned his name quietly when he gently bit my neck- a huge mistake, considering that seemed to be an invitation for him to bite harder, which only made it worse for me in two ways. I accidentally let out a slightly louder moan before coming to my senses and pushing him away from me.
