Chapter 7
Silence fell on the backyard. To say that everyone was shocked was the understatement of the year. Marie’s smile brightened as she hugged Marissa back tightly.
Marissa pulled away with a huge scowl and took a deep breath. Marie quickly scanned the area as she took note that everyone was staring at her with mouths agape. The unmated males were devouring her body by just looking at her and the same old pack whores looking at her in disgust.
It looked to Marie that everything was the same except for the burning gazes of the males.
“How dare you just leave without telling me anything?” yelled Marissa as she snapped her eyes back to her friends.
“Uh.” Noah pulled Marie to his chest and she sighed in contentment. “I guess I forgot?”
“Forgot? Forgot! Are you kidding me? Jonathon is she serious?” Marissa’s face was one of pure outrage as Jonathon was at a loss for words. He knew no matter what he said Marissa would whack his arm. Jonathon deciding on just staying quiet still received a hit from Marissa.
“That’s what you get for not answering!” fumed Marissa. “Seriously Marie, why didn’t you tell us?” Marissa’s voice ended in a whisper.
Ralph was still standing frozen in place until he lunged; ripping her from Noah and taking Marie down with him on the ground. She hugged him back with everything in her as tears started to escape her eyes. The pack returned to what they were doing and Marie finally spoke.
“Im sorry, it—I was just hurt. I couldn’t come back” Ralph scrambled up and held a hand out for Marie.
“We don’t blame you” Ralph told her softly. “We would have just liked to know what happened before you ran away.”
Marie slowly hugged Amy and Jonathon before standing next to Noah once more. “You know?”
“Tristan told us when he came back” Ralph leveled his gaze with hers.
“Oh.” Marie didn’t know what to respond to that. What was she supposed to say? ‘Oh hey guys! What’s up? Me? Oh nothing special you know just Tristan rejected me and left to go be with his mate.’
“At least something good came out it though…” Jonathon didn’t finish speaking as Marissa hit him behind his head.
“What do you mean something good?” Marissa’s jaw was clenched and Jonathon took an uneasy step back.
“Noah! Noah was the good thing that came out of this situation!” with his hands raised in protection, Jonathon glanced at Marie and Noah.
“I mean just look at them. My cousin has never looked this happy and he’s always talking about his beautiful girlfriend and blah, blah, blah! And Marie, you can’t forget her, look how she’s radiating happiness!” Ralph, Amy, Marissa and Noah turned to scrutinize Marie.
Sure she was beyond happy but she wasn’t sure it was because she was seeing her friends again; or because she was ‘in love’ with Noah. Marie coward in Noah’s chest as Marissa reached for her face and turned it from side to side.
“Okay, leave her alone! She just got here” Noah playfully slapped Marissa’s hands away tightened his hold on Marie. “I missed you” he whispered as he lowered his lips onto Maries.
Marie’s grin could only widen before she had a chance to respond as Noah’s soft lips coaxed plenty of unknown feelings out. She threw her hands around his neck and pressed him closer. She didn’t know if she could love Noah whole-heartedly like he did; but it sure looked like it was easy to do. Even some part of her was already whispering that she already did.
Maybe she never realized it because she was too busy caught up moping about Tristan.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa!” yelled Ralph breaking them up. “We understand you two want to spend ‘quality time’ together but not in front of the kids!”
Marie pulled away blushing as she saw kids making disgusted faces. “Let’s go sit down. We have a lot to catch up on” stated Marissa as she dragged her inside.
The others followed them in and all dropped into different couches. “Okay first off…” Jonathon started as he tugged Marissa over to his lap and place his head on her shoulder whilst rubbing circles on her flat tummy.
“Im pregnant!” Marissa shouted bouncing on Jonathon’s lap.
“And she has killer mood swings” muttered Jonathon. Marissa turned to glare at him and he looked really scared as he gently slid her off his lap and sat the furthest from her.
Marie was stunned to hear the great news and her eyes were glued to Marissa’s non-existent bump. “Congratulations!” Marie was truly happy for her friend even though it was hard to picture Marissa as a mother.
The girls began to talk and catch up as the guys turned on the television and started a Call of Duty: Black Ops tournament. Hours later after they were gossiping about the current male to find his mate, did Marie swallow hard.
When she arrived she had overlooked what they had said about Tristan; she was too cheerful to even recall what they had said. She fell silent as Marissa and Amy talked about how pretty the girl was and how her mate couldn’t leave her alone for five seconds. Marie mentally scolded herself for thinking about Tristan when Noah, her boyfriend, was sitting two feet away. ‘I will forget Tristan and love Noah!’ She screamed in her head.
A phone buzzing drew her attention away from them as she saw Ralph slip his hand in his pockets. He was currently throwing profanities at Jonathon since he wanted Noah to win. “Hello?” he answered whilst moving his head with the man on the screen.
“Wait, what?” Ralph’s posture stiffened and he faced Marie. Her own face furrowed in confusion to the nervous and scared look Ralph was giving her. Trying to listen intently she barely heard the voice on the other line above the noise from the television and the girls’ chatter.
“I said im arriving tonight Ralph. Is there extra guest bedrooms left?” Tristan’s faint voice made her eyes widen.
Marie inaudibly cursed and broke contact with Ralph. Why when she was the most determined to forget Tristan; did he have to come back into her life and throw her off key? ‘I guess I came back into his life’ she thought ‘I was the one to come to Colorado. Now look with what im going to face. The same person that I ran away from years ago.’
“Angel!” Noah stood above her with an outstretched hand. “Come on were going to go swimming in the little lake. What were you thinking so hard in that pretty little head of yours?” Everyone was gathered at the back door looking at her expectantly. Ralph on the other hand was tapping his foot nervously.
“Nothing baby lets go” she took Noah’s hand and pushed Tristan to the back of her thoughts. Walking through the woods at the back of the pack house she eyed Noah from the corner of her eye as he laughed with Jonathon.
This caring, sweet guy was hers and willing to always be there for her. She’d be damned if she gave him up anytime soon.
