Chapter 10
The thick tension surrounded everyone. They all eagerly waited to see what Marie’s reaction was going to be to Tristan. Stupefied, was how they were left when Marie spoke.
“Hello Tristan. Are you hungry? I made spaghetti.” Marie kept a cool composure with an emotionless face. Tristan nodded slowly, confused.
Marie turned around and started to take plates out of the cupboards and placed them next to the stove. She started to dish out the spaghetti; Amy and Marissa immediately stood to help her. The girls served their mates and Marie served some for Noah and Tristan.
The large table accommodated all of them perfectly. Amy placed a plate in front of Ralph before getting her own and sitting next to him as he sat at the head of the table. Marissa did the same to Jonathon whilst Marie pulled a pitcher of Iced Tea from the fridge.
She placed it on the counter and picked up two plates of food. Marie set down Noah’s first and gave him a huge smile. Tristan’s plate was placed in front of him and he looked up to Marie. But she was still eye locked with Noah.
He gritted his teeth and tightened his hold on the fork. The words he’d overheard Marie tell Noah bounced around his head. Marie said she loved Noah and that took him by surprise. He also remembered what Noah told him the night before; he called Marie his mate. Had they mated already?
Jonathon and Ralph sat at the heads of the eight person table and there were two spaces left; one next to Tristan and the other next to Noah. Marie sat the pitcher in the middle and returned to the kitchen for her plate.
The silence in the dining room was overbearing as they all stared at each other. Noah would smile at Tristan when he would catch him glaring in his direction. Noah, had all the right to smile, now that Marie had said she loved him. He felt like the happiest man in the planet and nobody; not even Tristan could take him off cloud nine.
When Marie entered she saw the sitting arrangement. Noah was in the middle of the three seats on one side and Tristan on the other. Amy was next to Tristan and Marissa next to Noah. She slowed down as she saw everyone look at her expectantly except for Noah who grinned at her.
She didn’t even have to think about where she was sitting. Marie sat down and Noah grabbed her hand under the table. Marie blushed and smiled up at him. The simplest of things made her blush now as if they were barely starting this relationship.
Jonathon and Ralph started conversing to lighten the mood; soon enough the girls were chatting and laughing. Marie was still holding hands with Noah and slowly eating. Her plastered smile was making her cheeks ache so she let it slip into a small smile.
Her body was shocked seeing Tristan. She had overheard Tristan tell Ralph he was coming last night but it had completely left her mind this morning. So when she saw him, her stomach dropped. She had to rein her hold on her wolf as she struggled to make her jump in his arms. So Marie started to serve the food.
Tristan’s scent was so intoxicating that it was itching all over her skin to be near him. His delicious scent had her leaning slightly forward and taking long quiet breaths to inhale the woodsy spice. Marie mentally slapped herself at her actions. ‘What am I doing!’ she yelled to her wolf.
Noah squeezed her hand and guilt washed in. Marie quickly started to finish her food and stood to take her empty plate to the sink. Gripping the edge of the counter; Marie took deep steady breaths. ‘Mate! Please let me be with my mate!’ her wolf whined and scratched trying to take control of her.
Marie silently went over they betrayal that happened so long ago in that diner down the road. Her wolf shut up with a painful blow to her heart. ‘Where was his mate now? Oh God please don’t let her be here!’ she prayed.
It was one thing to know her mate had chosen another but to see her? That was something that she knew she couldn’t handle. A tear slipped down her cheek and Marie hastily wiped it away. All that pain that she had gone through and that ache for him had been dulled out by Noah.
Smiling to herself Marie remembered all the good times she spent with him and how he tried to heal her. Marie hit her forehead with her palm; she couldn’t believe she never realized her love for Noah.
“Angel?” Noah’s arms wrapped around her waist; pulling her to him.
“Hmm?”
“Are you okay?” he asked whilst nuzzling into her neck.
“Yeah…” Noah spun her around and rested his forehead against hers.
“If Tristan’s making you uncomfortable we can go out for the day. I know it must not be easy to see him after so long.” He whispered so the others couldn’t hear.
“What? How…who told you this Tristan is the Tristan?” Marie gulped audibly.
Noah gave her a soft smile and gently rubbed her cheek. “This is the only Tristan I’ve met since I got here. Plus, he was jealous when he saw you with me the other night.”
“Other night?” Noah just nodded and pulled her out of the house. The others saw them leaving from the dining room and called out goodbye. All except Tristan.
Tristan immediately stood and left the room. By the time he reached his room his tears were spilling. He had no idea how much this would hurt if he ever saw her again. Especially with someone else.
“This must be how she felt.” He yelled to himself. But he knew it was worse for Marie because he rejected her. The smile that was on Marie’s face when she looked at Noah was just too much for him to handle and he punched the wall. He was happy that Marie hadn’t turned lifeless and that Noah helped her be happy.
But his wolf was on the verge of breaking free and tracking her down. Finally, he could claim her and make her rightfully his; only to be surprised with Noah.
She was so beautiful that when he saw her he was left breathless. That night she was asleep and didn’t see her chocolate brown eyes that called to him. He saw the way her wolf reacted through her eyes when she saw him. It made his wolf howl for joy to know that his mate still loved him and wanted him.
They say that mates’ wolfs can talk to each other while being in human form and for them not to know. His wolf had told him how much Marie wanted to be in his arms. Tristan loved her so much that he wasn’t going to do anything to get her, anything.
All those years without her and being by someone else was absolute torture and he wasn’t going to let the opportunity of having her slip out of his fingers.
“I love you so much Marie. So much, it hurts to the bone.” He muttered and hugged a pillow; curling into a ball. It was pathetic but he craved his mate and the huge sadness that enveloped him wasn’t going to lessen unless Marie was with him.
