Chapter 11
Marie sat on a little bench that overlooked the woods by the edge of the pack house property. Her fingers fiddled with a daisy as she looked longingly to the trees. For so long she had waited to see Tristan again and have him beg her to come back. But now that he was here, inside the pack house, she wished he wasn’t here.
Why didn’t he come earlier? Why couldn’t he have looked for her when she was barely starting with Noah? Surely if she wasn’t with Noah she would have forgiven Tristan in a heartbeat.
Marie smacked herself for even thinking that. Standing up she smoothed out her white summer dress and walked to the edge of the woods. Marie hid behind a tree and slipped off her white gladiator shoes with the rest of her clothes.
In wolf form she stretched out her front legs and popped her neck. She took off in light jog thinking about how Noah was so sweet with her. He pulled her out of the house and took her to a nearby carnival. They hadn’t returned home until the early hours of the morning and crashed in bed.
Marie avoided Tristan all day long and even made up excuses so Noah would leave her alone. She needed alone time to figure out the jumble mess of thoughts running in her head. She loved Noah, there was no doubt about that but was it strong enough for her to just see Tristan as a friend and not her mate.
Shaking her head at her own stupidity she almost tripped over a tree root. Of course she would always see Tristan as her mate; because he was supposed to be. “Why can’t things be easy?” she asked herself and dropped to the floor with her head on her paws.
“Because life is not easy” she snapped her attention to the silver wolf emerging from the bushes. Her body tensed at seeing Tristan hesitantly walk to her. Marie turned to look straight ahead pushing her wolf down.
Tristan suddenly blocked her view as he lay down directly in front of her. Their noses almost touching; Marie’s eyes locked with his and they stayed quiet.
Marie was mesmerized by the way the light reflected off of his eyes and the silver specks that seemed to glow as he gazed at her. Neither spoke a word as they lay facing each other. Tristan basked in the presence of his mate and sighed in content.
This was how it was supposed to be; just the both of them together. Marie started to remember all the wonderful times she spent with him and closed her eyes. The memories were just too much for her to handle. She knew she would crack if she kept looking into his eyes. Her eyes started to water even though they were closed. Marie clamped her jaw shut trying to force the tears to not spill.
Marie felt intense warmth and sparks fly when Tristan began to nuzzle the side of her face. A low whimper left her lips as he moved to lie next to her. His body pressed against hers and her wolf snuggled into him.
A sigh-like sound left her lips as she reveled in the feel of his body against hers. “I can’t do this” she told him in a whisper through their mind link. Tristan dropped his head on top of hers.
“Do what love?” She choked on air silently as she tried to tell him.
“This” Marie stood and loosened herself from Tristan’s hold. “You can’t just come back and act as if nothing happened. Im with Noah and you have your mate and child. We can’t be here like everything’s fine and the past didn’t happen.” She started to walk backwards still staring at Tristan.
Tristan’s heart broke again as he heard how much pain was leaked into her words. Her wolfs eyes begged him to not let her go; to stay with her forever but Marie didn’t want that. He stood on shaky legs and took a step towards her.
“Im not trying to pretend nothing happened. I just want us to fix things. There is no one stopping us from being together anymore.” He told her softly.
She scoffed which made a choking sound come out of her wolf’s snout. “No one? Did you forget about your mate?”
“There is no mate and child.” He told her simply which caught Marie off guard.
“How could you say that! You don’t even care about your own child? That’s very low of you.” With that Marie spun around and took off running to the house. She quickly changed back and jogged into the house.
Amy and Marissa stopped her in the hallway. “Hey girly! We have to start getting ready!” Marissa pulled her down the corridor and into her room.
“Uh, why?” Amy was tugging her hair with a hairbrush and heating the curling iron. Looking at them through the reflection in the mirror she saw that they had on dresses with their makeup and hair done.
“Were going clubbing duh!”
