Richard John took his opportunity to switch over channels on the television. It was his thirty seventh birthday and since his sixteen year old son, Junior, had come to spend the week with him, he had lost control of the television remote and was subjected to watching soaps and sports non-stop.
Junior had bought his father a cake for his birthday. It was a lovely thought and it was pleasing that Junior had come to stay with him. However, the week had dragged and Richard was forced to miss many activities he would normally have used to assist him unwind. For example Richard jogged five times a week, on average ten miles a day. He went to boxing classes twice a week and spent at least half a hour a day at the gym, pushing weights. None of which he was able to do, whilst Junior was around. He had also insisted that his girlfriend avoid coming round, as he didn't want her to be a reminder to his son, as to why he was no longer with Junior's mum.
Junior had stepped into the kitchen to cut a couple of slices of rich chocolate cake and make a cup of tea for his dad.
Richard had turned over the television channel to catch up with the evening news.
'Dad, you having one or one and a half sugar's this time?', Junior shouted from the kitchen.
Richard sucked his teeth, his Jamaican heritage showing, even though he was born in Birmingham.
'One', Richard yelled back. He didn't like having to hold a conversation through raised voices.
He turned his focus to The News In Short, which relayed the news of the day in five minutes.
"The major retailer PC World has been forced into administration today, reports state that this could potentially be a loss of fifteen hundred jobs over the next two months. This is the third major retailer to close their doors in the past two months"
"MP Peter O'Donald has issued a statement regarding the controversial street tax, which is scheduled for implementation next month. Any car owner who has not installed their car with the tax meter by then will face a £250 fine"
"Two men have been arrested for the murder of Bogdan Polka, four hours after Mr Polka was found dead in the middle of Broad Street, in Droitwich. Brothers Martin and Geoff Whitman will face the newly implemented and highly controversial death penalty. This is the fifth incident, attributed to the New England Group, in the Worcester area and is the thirty third incident in the UK since November 2029"
'Stupid name for a racist group', Junior said, 'may as well call themselves the Klu Klux Klan'
Richard looked up at his son, who placed his tea in front of him on the coffee table and handed him a generous slice of cake, on a small plate.
'Thanks son'
Richard bit his lip. He had his own opinion of the New England Group, even though it wasn't a popular view with people of ethnic decent. He believed he understood why people joined the New England Group. He believed they were the vocal minority expressing the views of the silent majority. The country had gone to ruin and it was because the government were unable to control the flow of migrants from other countries.
Richard knew his thoughts were hypocritical, as his family had descended from the West Indies. But he had also been a part of the 2026 protest against the government, as they continued to allow migrants in. It had been the influx of North Korean's that had caused the 2026 protest, which went on for three months, during which time, there were riots and hundreds of arrests.
After the protests died down, the New England Group was formed. Initially, everyone thought the New England Group's sole purpose was to fight immigration, to stop further migrants from entering their depleted country. However, once the leader was named, Percival Granthom, former deputy leader of the British National Party, renowned for his racist views, the hundreds of ethnics, who were ready to join the NEG, suppressed their views and seeped back into the cracks of society.
'Did you hear the Polish guy left behind a wife and two children, one four, one six?'
'Yeah, I heard son'
'They should arrest the lot of them'
