21:30'At least the traffic's moving again', Billy said
The boys had had to fill out a form, that a uniformed officer had given to them, before they were allowed to proceed. There were other police directing them down the end of Lavender Crescent and then right, which brought them just outside the hospital.
The traffic stopped. The boys waited, after a few seconds, they saw screaming people running in their direction.
'Shit. What the fucks going on?'
'Don't know, but it can't be good', Justin responded.
'You think we should get out and follow them'
'No. Lets just wait it out'
After less than five minutes, no one passed the car. The traffic was still motionless, everything was silent.
'I'm going to see what's going on', Justin said opening the door.
'Fuck man, you're crazy.......ah shit, wait for me', Billy said getting out the opposite side.
Billy came up behind Justin as he walked between the cars, looking for something, something that was frightening enough to make everyone run in fear for their lived. He saw nothing.
'Over there', Billy said, tapping a hand on Justin's shoulder.
Justin looked in the direction of where he was pointing. At first, he saw nothing, then he noticed people lying on the ground and realized somewhere out there, was a gunman.
They both dropped to the ground simultaneously.
'Junior. Clarise', Justin said looking in Billy's direction.
'I know', Billy replied. He wanted to give Justin some reassurances they were fine, but knew he couldn't.
Justin started crawling forward, towards the entrance of the hospital grounds.
'Where you going?'
'Get a closer look. Maybe help some people'
'Fuck', Billy said, but followed his friend.
It didn't take them long to get close to the entrance. There were over ten bodies lying between them and the gate. Justin could make out the muffled cries of people in hiding, but couldn't see anyone. He wondered, for a moment, if he was hiding at the wrong angle and therefore in plain sight of whoever was doing the shooting.
Justin noticed a black officer lying prone, another figure under him. It was an Asian woman, she was covered in blood and her eyes were darting from left to right. She was alive.
'There's one out there that's alive', Justin called back, 'I'm going to get her'
Billy gripped hold of his arm. 'No you're not. She's safe there. You go out, trying to rescue her, you not only put yourself in danger, but her too'
Justin thought about it for a moment and realized Billy was right.
Second later, Justin could hear voices loud, as a police officer emerged from hiding. More started to come out. Doctors and nurses started pouring out of the hospital to deal with the injured.
'I'm guessing its over', Billy said.
Justin was already in full flight to the woman.
'Are you okay', he asked as he crouched down beside her. She nodded, tears streaming down her face.
'My family?', she asked.
Justin looked around, seeing a Asian girl and boy lying dead among the bodies. He turned back to her, 'I don't know', he lied through gritted teeth.
'Billy. Go get one of those doctors. Quick'
Billy set off, in a sprint.
'Just stay calm. Do you know if you've been hit?'
'I don't know', she struggled through the tears.
"Keep her talking", Justin kept saying to himself, "keep her talking"
'What's your name?'
'Soma'
'Nice to meet you Soma. My names Justin. I'm just going to move this man off of you, okay?'
She forced a smile through her tears.
'Thanks Justin'
Justin carefully moved the black officer off her, feeling pained by the blood that was spreading through his fingers.
Billy returned with two orderlies pushing a wheeled bed, a doctor followed.
The doctor dropped down next to Justin.
'Thanks. I'll take over from here', she said.
'Justin?'
Justin looked up at one of the orderlies. 'Aunty Carla'
