Goodbyes Are Hard When You Are Losing Everything

"You have a son Vega." I laughed as I sat next to her handing her, her baby. Thomas sat my blanket on her legs and she smiled at him then she smiled down at the wide awake healthy looking baby boy.

"Hi.." she told him. I watched as Thomas sat down and he wiped his eyes.

"Thomas are yo-." I began.

"Shut up." he told me. "What are you going to name it?"

"Him."

"Shut up Hunter."

"Daniel Ryan Smyers." Vega said.

"Daniel Ryan I like that." I told her. "You did good." I stood up and I went to the water and I dipped my hands in it cleaning away all of the blood. The water was cool and I got lost in my reflection. The man looking back at me was smiling for once what seems like forever it was a good look for him but the burn across his face nipped it in the bud before his grin became any wider. I hit the water breaking my reflection and I looked at Vega and Thomas who stared at me. "Bug."

"There is something seriously wrong with you." Thomas told me. "And I would love to tell you more about that but I'm actually too happy to tell you those reasons."

"Uh huh." I sat next to Vega leaning my back against the rock wall and I leaned my head against her shoulder. I watched the baby in her arms look at me wide eyed and I turned my head knowing what he was thinking.. Whoa look at this freak. I would be thinking the same thing if I saw what I looked like sitting next to me.

I fell asleep for what seemed like just minutes but the kicking in my side and the bright light told me I was out for a while. "Hunter get the fuck up!" Thomas sounded worried so I forced myself awake.

"What?" I asked.

"Look." he lifted up the blanket that covered Vega and her legs and ground was filled with blood. It formed a puddle around her and I looked up at Vega to see she wore a sallow look. She's dying. I looked back at Thomas and his face told me he knew too. "She wouldn't let me tell you sooner. Sorry." he kissed Vega's cheek and he stood up. "If you need me I'll be outside."

"Thomas." Vega said her voice cracked with pain.

"Yeah?"

"Thank you."

"Anytime sister." he ran a hand over his eyes as he disappeared.

Dan stood next to me as he has this entire night smiling away cheering her on even crying a bit at the sight of his newborn son but I didn't pay much attention to him. I wanted to block him out so I did. It wasn't that hard. It was a true break through to my recovery. "She dying." Dan said.

"Vega why didn't you wake me up?" I asked.

"Don't cry over spilled blood hunny bun." she told me as she held Daniel close she tried smiling but her filled instead. "I knew the consequences to my actions and I did them anyways just know that I am sorry for leaving you with a baby that isn't yours."

"Vega."

"I need you to watch him and keep him safe. Make sure he doesn't turn into a monster. Treat him as your own... Can you maybe read him bedtime stories?"

"Vega."

"Hunter please... You have to promise me.. Please?" she begged as her eyes filled with water and I felt mine do the same as I kissed the side of her head.

"I'll keep him safe and sound. I'll make sure to check for monsters under his bed every night and tell him about his mom and dad and how they were my heroes and damn good people that didn't deserve this. I'll make sure he is fed and I'll keep him alive as long as it is humanly possible. I'll make sure to treat him like the prince that he is."
