Chapter 3

Glamour up - desi wedding style

I make sure to close the door as quietly as I possibly can.

“What took you so long?” said a familiar voice. “Ahh!” I scream. Trying, to slow down my racing heart. “You still didn’t answer my question” said a now bored Tara. I look up.

“Well...uhh…you see…well it’s kind of a long story?” I finally manage to say. Tara doesn’t say anything but shoots me the ‘look’ that made me want to cover my eyes in fear out there. Trust me. You do not want to find yourself at the end of the ‘look’. Okay?  I’m just trying to save you from her wrath. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go find a rock to be under. Okay. Bye.

“Ash!” exclaims  Sunni. She excitedly runs over and hugs the life out of me. Oh I just love Sunni. Her name fits her to a T. She’s the most harmless person ever. She is super nice and sweet. Way different than me and Tara here. I think I may have to resort to begging my gorgeous BFF to let go of me just so I can, I don’t know, BREATHE!

“SUNNI I CAN’T BREATHE” I somehow manage to get out. She is literally cutting off my air supply.

“Oh I’m sorry, I just haven’t seen you for a while.” Sunni says apologetically.

“Sunni you saw me just yesterday! I exclaimed before sighing.

“Yeah but, that was yesterday! It’s been a whole 12 hours! Excuse me for being loving” she retorts.

“Oh you know how much I love you!” I say while giving my cute angry friend a side hug.

“Yeah of course this is me we are talking about here, how can you not? I’m a catch” she says returning my hug.  “Oh Sunni “I joke.

“You’re a catch too babe” she replies laughing along with me.

“Well I wouldn’t want to intrude on this ‘moment’ but don’t we have, oh, I don’t know, a wedding to deal with?” says a far away voice. “Oh c’mon Tara!” exclaims Sunni. “Give it a rest and come join our hug! This is my wedding ritual you know, they clearly can’t start without me! Besides, you don’t have to jealous, you’re a catch too” Sunni says winking. Tara gives up and runs over to  join our group hug. “This is nice.” says a very happy Sunni. “Yeah, if you say so.” Tara and I say at the same time. “JINX!” we both say while pointing at each other. Then all three of us just burst out laughing. Some things just never change.

A banging on the door disrupts our hug.  Ruining the moment, we now release our hug of friendship. Tara and I get started on what we are here to do. Make a beautiful bride out of our friend. I immediately attack her hair while Tara expertly applies her makeup.  We both adorn her with her very heavy bridal jewelry. After applying the finishing touches we both take a step back and just look at our masterpiece. She’s gorgeous to say the least. She looks so beautiful in her yellow sari with a bedazzled border and some heavy beautiful crystal work. Sid didn’t do a bad job. Not to mention her makeup done flawlessly, all done by our very own Tara of course.

“You guys need to change quickly!” Sunni says handing us our outfits she picked out. I haven’t even seen what it looks like. Usually I would have a problem with that. But since this is her wedding and all. I’ll just let her have her days.

I quickly head into the dressing room. This better be at least okay looking. I unzip it slowly. And I’ll tell you the truth; it’s not ugly, no, not at all. It’s actually quite…beautiful. It’s a peachy red lehenga (skirt) with light beading. Wow, Sunni knows me real well. I quickly change into the lehenga.

Once I step out of the dressing room, I hear a gasp in the room. Sunni looks shell shocked. Tara  is smirking. “You look so…..gorgeous.” Sunni stutters out. I don’t blame her, I hardly dress up like ever. I smile at her shocked expression. “You clean up quite well my dear friend.” Tara says smirking. “Why thank you, you don’t look so bad yourself.” I smirk back at her. Tara looks just like Tara. Simply Tara, trust me. Tara always looks good.  A beautiful pink outfit just the right shade contrasting with her tanned skin.

“C’mon Ash, hop on, let’s get started on your makeup!” Tara says indicating the spiny chair. Once I got my hair and makeup done by Lalita, Sunni offered to do her hair and makeup. By the time were done, Tara and I placed the veil on Sunni’s head, making sure to not ruin her time consuming hair style. There. The finishing piece. I glance at the mirror and smile and I must say we, three look quite fierce. Let’s get this Henna/Holud (Wedding Ritual) on! Turn up, Desi wedding style!
