Chapter 4
Putting a name to the face
One word to describe what was going around me. Chaos.
Pure. Utter. Chaos
Woah. I have never appreciated Sunni more than right now.
She’s always been a simple no fuss kind of girl. That makes this wedding thing so much more bearable. Weddings themselves are kind of crazy. But desi weddings? Knock it up a couple levels. They are just plain insanity! Trust me I know. I have been dragged to these weddings almost every week since I have breathed my very first breath. So me and weddings you can say…. have kind of a long painful history.
People, people everywhere. I’m kind of an introvert type of person, but for some reason I felt oddly calm and relaxed. I guess it has to do with the fact that it’s Sunni’s wedding and these people are all Sunni’s friends and family. And Sunni’s family is kind of like my second family. I much prefer them to my real family. Sunni’s family knows things between me and my family are not very good. I have always felt envious of Sunni’s family dynamics and loving nature. I defiantly didn’t grow up in a very stable and loving environment. I snort, that’s for sure.
“Hey Ash there’s some people I want you to meet.” Sunni says, dragging me along with her.
“Aunty and uncle, I’m so glad you could make it all the way from London!” Sunni says smiling at an older couple.
They both smile warmly at her. “Beta, we wouldn’t miss your wedding for the world” says the older woman.
“Ash.” Sunni’s says, snapping me out of my thoughts. “This is my aunt and uncle from London, you know, the ones I always told you about? You know from my mom’s side.” She says, indicating the older couple. I smile at them. “Hello aunty, uncle.” I say politely. “My my, you are such a beauty! You must be married already; someone must have snatched up a gorgeous girl like you!” She says grinning at me. I instantly blush. She’s definitely not the normal desi auntie. Thank gosh, you know how they can be at times. Such a sweet woman, anyone who has her for a mother in law is indeed lucky. “Thank you aunty, but I am still single.” I say shyly. She laughs. “Ooh my son still has a chance then.” She says jokingly. I smile. “Oh, we must be going sweetie, we’ll talk later, okay?” She said. I smile, feeling myself fall into a better mood. “Of course.” I say.
“Ash, I also want you to meet my cousin Karthik. The one that always made my life just a little bit more difficult.” She says laughing, pointing at a familiar looking face. My good mood was instantly ruined. I stare at his face in shock. He smirks. Sunni snaps her fingers in front of my face. I snap out of my shock and let out a yelp. This causes him to laugh a deep kind of sexy laugh. I might have been arguing with him earlier but I failed to notice how he’s good looking he is. That just doesn’t cut it. He has messy black hair, honey colored eyes framed by thick lashes. Not to mention that scar above his left eye that makes him look kind of dangerous in a …sexy way. But that doesn’t matter, this is the jerk, who took me as a joke, mocked me. He may be good looking but he’s a butt face in the inside.
After he finishes laughing, he extends his hand for a handshake and says “My name may be Karthik but I go by Tarek.” Man, I also failed to notice his very deep melodious voice. I also failed to notice his slight British accent. Well he is from London and all that explains it. With a girl like me that is so focused on arguing, I am totally oblivious to the things around me. Anyways, back to the situation at hand. I shake his hand awkwardly. “Yeah…hi, I’m Aashni , but I go by Ash.” I say back. He then proceeds to smirks again. Granted he still looks just as dashing, even while smirking. But there is just something about this guy that just infuriates me to no end.
“Well I have to go check on some things, even if this is my wedding; I sadly have some responsibilities to take care of.” Sunni says and walks away. The minute she’s out of sight I snap back my hand so fast it’s like I just got burned.
Karthik then leans in close to my ear and whispers “you clean up quite good Squeak” which makes me shiver instantly making me go back to my normal self. “You!” I say. “Yes, it is I, in the flesh, no need to be so shocked” he said. “Can you move over? Your monkey face is giving me a rash” I said irritated. “C’mon we both know that’s the last thing you think about my face. Besides, I can scratch that itch, if you know what I mean” he says winking at me. “Can you say gross?” I retort. “I say highly good looking and charming” he says smirking, but I’m not having any of this. Does he ever stop smirking? I’m not some form of entertainment for this douche bag. I already been pushed around by my family enough, I don’t need this guy to add to it. So I just leave, having enough of this. I walk proudly away from him, getting as far away from him as I possibly can.
I glance back for a moment to see his shocked expression. I get a satisfaction in the fact that he probably has never had any girl walk away from him. It was probably always vice versa for him. Well, there is always a first for everything. I wave at him, this time I’m smirking in the process. He finally snaps out of it. Ha-Ha. Well I’d like to say that was fun. But in all reality that wasn’t.
