It was mid afternoon and I was sitting inside my house, in the living room; laying on one of my leather couches shirtless.
It was warm in here, I kept the heat on full blast.
But it was only 26 degrees outside.
Across from me on one of the big leather chairs was my Grandfather, and next to him on the love seat was my father.
Both previous Alphas of our pack.
"Travis, we have a lot to talk about, First and most importanly, it is possible for you to train yourself to stay human in the cold weather. We both think it's time for you to start figuring it out." My father said.
"Yes, when I was young, and first became Alpha, I learned to fight the wolf inside so I could remain human and take care of pack business. Of course, I also learned to let go, and let the cold take over again so I could become a wolf again and train, fight and hunt with the rest of the pack." My grandfather put his insight into the conversation.
"Wait. You mean, you didn't just sit inside the house with the heat on full blast?" I asked while staring directly at them.
They both had eyes like me, except theirs had become less vivid through the years. They were like matching pairs of light blue skies. Unlike my bright electric colored ones.
"No. We both learned to go out and continue on with our lives as humans, in the winter. Even your mother and grandmother. At the time, both of them Luna's, were able to stay human because of our strong mate bond. They had Alpha blood. It allowed them to fight the cold winter months alongside us. Just like your mate will be able to do... Once you mate of course."
Well that was... weird coming from my Father.
"Even though she's a human?" I asked.
"Yes. I don't think that will lessen the strength of your bond and your Alpha blood. She will be just as strong as a full blooded werewolf, maybe even stronger since she will be mated with an Alpha." My Grandfather answered.
I was still just starting to learn about these secrets of being able to stay human during the winter.
All my life, I had thought the cold made me become an animal, because it was protecting me, like the Legend said.
Our ancestors had merged their souls with the wolves during the winter to stay warm under the dense fur, and be able to hunt more swiftly. It was said after generations of this, we eventually because part wolf, part human- instead of merging the two together; we just became one.
There was no merging involved anymore, we were born with our wolf spirit inside of us. It was like having a split personality in your head. Like having someone in your mind, talking to you and making decisions for you based on intense animalistic emotions.
That was my wolf. That was me.
"But, then why don't I ever remember you and Mom staying human during the winter? Or you and Grandma?" I asked both of them.
"Well, because there was really no need to. By the time you were born, there was't a lot of human pack business we needed to take care of in the winter. We just wanted to spend as much time as we could with you. So we could teach you to run, and hunt and play as a wolf. We had no reason to leave your side during the cold months." My Father said as if it were the most obvious fact in the world.
I thought about that for a moment.
I couldn't belive this whole time they had the ability; as Alphas to stay human in the winter.
This changed a lot. I could stay near Krystal all the time.
As much as I wanted.
I just needed to teach myself to fight the cold.
