The boys and I pull up to the little diner by the building. It was a little chilly and windy as the storm past. We hauled into the diner trying to get away from the cold.
As we walked in, a less than happy waitress looked up at us. Her glare almost made me walk back through the door.
"How many?" She spits, throwing her bifocals on and reaching for menus.
I choak on my words, trying to get over the feeling of this place. Jared, sensing my discomfort, speaks up, "Three. Near the back windows."
The waitress exhales, laughing a bit before walking us back to our table. She throws the collection of menus on the table and walks away.
"Don't worry about us. It's not like its your job or anything." Shannon mutters, skidding into the chair.
Jared and I follow and reach for one menu. We all look over it for a minute before the waitress comes back with a tray of waters.
"Ready to order?" the waitress sighs, pulling out a notepad and pencil.
Jared coughs and peeks up at Shannon and me.
I bare a grin, "I'll have the pancake stack with a side of fruit."
The lady writes down my order without looking up from her notepad. Next is Jared who orders a cup of coffee and some fruit. Again, without budging, the waitress takes down the order. Then theres Shannon:
"A double chocolate fudge meltdown." he smiles as he hands the menu back to the waitress.
All three of us, the waitress lady, Jared, and I, stare at Shannon.
"Double chip fuck cluster what?" Jared tries to question.
Shannon looks over at his brother and pulls the menu near. He points to a little description under the waffle section.
Jared laughs and clears his throat, " A monsterous 2 inch chocolate waffle with drippy fudge sauce and chocolate chips topped with powdered sugar and whipped cream. Served with fruit and toast."
The waitress walks away, telling us our order will be here shortly. I, still in shock, stare at Shannon. I wait for him to say something, react, take his phone out, something, but no. Nothing. He sits there with a smug smile on his face knowing that he has successfully stunned the only people in this diner.
I blink, and glance over at Jared who's already looking at me. His cheeky smile matched his brothers.
"It's 10 in the morning. What the hell Shannon?!?" I ask, facing him.
Laughter errupted from the brothers. Their nose crinkled, holding back tears. Apparently they were proud of the ruckus they made because they looked at the people around us and offered them to join in.
I rested my head in my hands and shook it, hiding the smile that crept on my face.
"So Dawson," Shannon said, still laughing in between words, "tell me, why haiti?"
I immediately look up, Shannon still smiling. His inquisitive eyes pull the answer from me.
"Its a long story."
