04. The Soul is Beautiful

You were laying on the ground in the middle of a clearing, panting. Your body was bruised, scratched, and screaming from pain and exhaustion. On the other hand, Neji stood a few feet away looking squeaky clean like he had just stepped out of the shower. You had been training with Neji for the past few months but the results were the same. You had barely scratched him and you were lying on the floor again.

"Let's try it again, buddy!" you enthusiastically said, forcing yourself to stand up," there's no way I'm stopping until I hit you at least once today!"

"There's no point in continuing, Fool" Neji tried to reason with you," you don't have any stamina left."

"Of course I do!" You pout and gave him the puppy eyes hoping he would fall for your cuteness,"I can still feel chakra running through me!!!"

"What chakra? You barely had any to begin with," he muttered, gesturing an unimpressed hand at you. You rolled you eyes at the sky and charged at him. He sighed, you could be so stubborn at times.

"Why do you insist on defeating me?" Neji inquired. He was accustomed to seeing you quarrel with everyone else, specifically with the boy you called Pinky. It puzzled Neji and he knew it had something to do with you talking to Hinata. You threw a punch but he caught it as expected.

"Because Hinata told me the byakugan can see everything," you answered as you continued to punch, kick, and elbow him in every way possible. He caught every punch, blocked every kick, and countered every elbow. Sensei wasn't lying, Neji truly was a prodigy. Taijutsu came naturally to him, he excelled in chakra control and his byakugan only enhanced his abilities.

"Because it does," Neji replied with a hint of pride for his kekkei genkai," there are no flaws to the byakugan."

"But there is a flaw," you said. 

"And what may that be?" He asked, not phased by all of your assaults which he was blocking so smoothly.

"Well," you began as the two of you moved back and forth in sync to counter and strike at one another," you can't see my soul."

Taken aback by the response, Neji accidentally dealt a blow to your heart. Your whole body convulsed at the sudden impact and you grabbed his outstretched arm to balance yourself, leaning forward to cough up blood. You slowly lifted your head to see the frown on his face. 

With all the strength you had left, you smiled at him. Neji was so kind. He had avoided hitting all of your organs up until now and even as you locked eyes with him, you could see the guilt creeping behind his snow white eyes.

With a shaky arm, you raised a closed fist to his heart before gently punching it in return.

"But, I can see your's."

To be honest, you didn't want to test his byakugan or his ability. You didn't want to win the match. You weren't training to defeat Pinky in a battle or to pass the academy exam. You were just spending time with Neji because time was short and it should be spent with the people who made you the happiest. 

Then you blacked out.

When you came back to your senses, you were staring at a beige ceiling. The ultraviolet rays of sunlight beamed through the glass window, bathing the bed you were lying in with warmth. 

To your left was a nightstand, a vase filled with vibrant golden sunflowers sat on the desk. You laughed so loud the whole hospital must have heard you. You couldn't believe it. Neji had brought you flowers. You couldn't imagine him walking into a flower shop. He must have been so embarrassed carrying flowers around.
