I’m sitting at the kitchen table with Justin and Nadine before she goes to work
“I didn’t know Cheryl had a niece” Nadine says with a mouth full of food
“yeah she is Nicola’s little girl Cheryl is also her godmother so she decided Bella should live with her now” I say munching on some toast
“oh right so she is not going back to work now?” she asks
“well not for the next 3 weeks but then she is going back but doing shorter hours, now enough of Cheryl what’s going on with you?” I say staring at her
“what do you mean?” she says
“well the fact you’ve been acting weird for the past few days and that you have been avoiding Jason’s call I mean I know you broke up but maybe he wants to see how you are” I say with a small smile
“its complicated”
“how?” I ask she lets out a loud sigh and looks me in the eye
“I think I’m pregnant” she says
“what! OH MY GOD are you sure?” I say taking hold of her hand
“yeah I missed two of my periods” she says nodding her head
“have you told Jason?” I ask
“no that’s why I’m avoiding his calls” she says with a sigh
“well have you been to the doctors to make sure?” I ask
“no I’ve been to busy with work”
“Nadine?!” I nearly shout making her jump
“sorry” I say
“don’t worry about it I will go to the doctors later I promise”
“do you want me to go with you?” I say
“nah I will be okay” she smiles at me
“but now I need to get to work or I’m gonna be late” she says getting up hugging me and then hugging Justin then she leaves the house
I look at Justin playing on the floor with my necklaces and bangles he has the biggest smile on his face it makes me smile too, I think about Nadine about how she is coping and why she didn’t tell me before today I let out a sigh then I think of Cheryl I hope she is adjusting to being a parent of sorts maybe I should invite her round give her a bit of advice, I start thinking about Cheryl and about how she dealt with the lose of her sister , I mean she is the only one that understands what I’ve been through I can trust her about that, I think its good that we met each other that day I think it was fate or something I don’t know but I know that she has helped me get over my lose and I don’t even think she knows she has done that.
“mummy?” Justin says and I see that he is wearing my necklaces around his neck all five of them I laugh a little and hold my arms out and he jumps into them I look down at him and he gives me a big smile
“how about we go to the shops?” I ask him
“yeah and buy sweets” he smiles I laugh
“okay but not to many okay?” I say he nods and I get him ready to go out.
Cheryl’s POV
Todays the day the social worker will come over the flat is spotless Bella’s room is tidy at the moment she is sitting on the sofa with her Barbie dolls I hope this meeting goes well I don’t want her taken away from me I sit on the sofa next to her and stroke her hair when the doorbell goes I get up and answer when I open the door I’m shocked by who’s behind it
“Nadine?”
“hello Mrs Tweedy I’m Bella’s social worker” she smiles
“errr yes okay please come in” I say still in slight shock I move out of the way and let Nadine in
“do you mind if I have a look around the place?” she asks
“no that’s okay” I smile and go and sit with Bella again did Kim know Nadine will be the social worker? No she would have told me wouldn’t have she?
“well everything seems pleasant and nice may I sit down?” Nadine says walking in to the front room
“yes please do sit down” I say Nadine sits on the opposite sofa
“Bella the social worker is here” I say Bella looks up and smile
“hello Bella I’m Nadine how are you?” she asks
“I’m fine thank you” Bella says
“how are you getting on in your new home?” Nadine asks
“I love it, I love living with my auntie chez” Bella smiles widely
“would you show me your room I would love to see it” Nadine smiles Bella looks at me
“its okay babes Show Nadine your room” I smiles Bella gets off the sofa and walks to her bedroom door with Nadine behind her and me behind Nadine
“wow I’m guessing purple is your favourite colour?” she says
“yeah auntie Cheryl painted before I came to live here” Bella smiles
“your room is very nice and tidy” Nadine says
“auntie Cheryl helps me keep it clean I don’t like mess” Bella says it makes me smile
“thank you for showing me your room Bella” Nadine says and we walk back to the front room
“when will Bella be starting school?” Nadine asks
“in 2 weeks I want her o get settled first you know get used to living here and knowing the area” I say Nadine writes something on a note pad
“is she eating all right?” she asks
“yes she does she has all three meals a day” I reply
“and how is she sleeping?” she asks
“like a baby” I say Nadine continues to write things down she looks at me and smiles
“I’m not judging you I’m just writing down important things that will need to go in her file that’s all Cheryl” she says I breath a sigh of relief and nod
“everything seems to be looking good so far Cheryl there’s no need to be worried I’m sure Bella will settle in well” she smiles we sit in silence for awhile before I choose to ask Nadine the question that has been bugging me
“Nadine did Kimberley know you would be Bella’s social worker?” Nadine looks at me
“no she didn’t I didn’t know until this morning I’m here to do my job Cheryl nothing else” she smiles Nadine stays for another 15 minutes asking Bella more questions before leaving when close the door I flop down on the sofa next to Bella and watch her play peacefully with her Barbie’s.
