Owlwhisker cautiously peered over the edge of the cliff. Emberfoot's body lay there, neck twisted at an odd angle. Then, an explosion sounded. "It's over." Owlwhisker mewed sadly. The Windclan team had been wandering a plateau and Emberfoot had fallen over the edge. After a few moments, his body faded away. Owlwhisker turned back to his team. "Let's head down to the valley over there where it's less steep." Owlwhisker meowed as he gestured to a gully. The other cats nodded then started to pad away. Nightcloud looked back and sighed. These games are sick. I don't want to kill anyone. If I killed myself now I would be out of the games and Breezepelt would hopeful feel regret, but I can't leave Crowfeather, not yet. Nightcloud thought grimly. She shook away the thought and continued walking. A rabbit dashed out from a bush. Sunstrike sprinted after it and sliced it with the bone claws that she was wearing. The cats congratulated her before they ate the rabbit.

When they reached the gully, they headed down the relatively shallow descent. Nightcloud scented the air. "Wait." she said suddenly. "What is it?" Owlwhisker asked. "I smell a fox." Nightcloud meowed. The flame colored creature stalked out from the tall grass next to the gully. The cats gasped when they saw that the fox's eyes were just like Emberfoot's and it had two dark gray paws. "E-Emberfoot?" Sunstrike stuttered. The fox growled and launched itself at Nightcloud. She kicked it off and was soon attacked by Owlwhisker and Sunstrike. It rammed its head into Owlwhisker, knocking him off balance. It was about to do the killing blow, but Sunstrike jumped on it and bit its neck. Its body went limp and fell to the ground. Tears streamed from Sunstrike's eyes. "D-did I just kill Emberfoot?" she wailed. "No you didn't. It just looked like Emberfoot to fool us." Owlwhisker comforted. Emberfoot had been Sunstrike's mentor and losing him was hard on her. "Ok just it didn't feel right killing him, it, whatever that was." Sunstrike meowed. "Well let's keep moving, or else another one might attack us." Nightcloud meowed, slightly impatient. They padded down the gully once again.
