I hit the ground with a loud thud. I look up, expecting my mom to be standing right in front of me. I'm disappointed to see I'm at the corner of Dairy and Queen. My mother is no where to be seen. I close my eyes and try to fall back into my dream world so I can try again. But nothing happens. It's as if I've completely lost my ability to dream. I look around me. Not much has changed since I was last here. Maybe my mom's just around the corner I think and shout,
"Mom!"
No one responds so I try again,
"Mom!"
I hear a hissing noise come from around the corner. Slowly, I cautiously peek around the corner. Nothing's there. But very faintly I can make out a figure moving in the shadows of an alley. I make my way towards the figure, careful not to make any sudden movements when I notice a shadow appear in front of me that is far to deformed to be mine. I stop and hold my breath. The shadow also stays still. I slowly turn around to face whatever is behind me and nearly have a heart attack when I see what it is. Behind me is an ogre. I'm not joking a legitimate ogre is standing behind me. He has a pig nose and wrinkly greyish green skin. He's short and he's stout. An idea crosses my mind and I raise my hand. I quickly shake my hand then stand still. The ogre doesn't move. He's blind. I think to myself. So he can't see, but he must have a very good sense of hearing. His eyes are large and glossy and they're looking right at me, yet you can tell they don't work because his pupils aren't moving. How am I going to get out of this one? I ask myself. Slowly, I back away from the creature. He doesn't appear to hear me. So far so good. I approach a ladder that is mounted to the side of a building and try to pull it down. It doesn't move. I pull again. The ladder comes down with a crash and the ogre growls and runs towards me. I scramble to grab hold of the ladder and begin to climb, the ogre is hot on my trail. He's so close now I can feel his hot breath on my ankles. Finally I reach the roof of the building and I pull myself up. I start running but am stopped when I reach the edge of the roof. I look down and only then do I realize how high up I actually am. The garbage bins on the ground in the alley look like ants. Was I really climbing for that long? Time flies when you're being chased by an ogre. I can hear the ogre stomping behind me, he's not fast but he's big so he covers lots of ground. I know there's no escaping this any other way, so I close my eyes and jump.Am I dead?
Is this what it feels like to be dead?
I open my eyes.
Nope, not dead.
Slowly, I attempt to stand as I take in my surroundings. I appear to be in a dumpster. I must've jumped off the roof and landed in what I thought was a garbage bin, which is actually a dumpster. I really was quite high up. I'm surprised I didn't break anything- really with that impact I should have-.
I stop moving. I can't move. What the? I feel no pain but then again I can't actually feel anything. My upper body can move but my legs can't. Great. I think. What am I supposed to do now? I lie back down on the piles of trash. So is this how it ends? I survive jumping off a building but I'll starve to death in a dumpster. I'm lying down, with my eyes closed when to my great surprise and delight I feel a dream coming on. Finally. It's about time. The dream takes over but I am not in any dream I have ever been in before.
