The air smells fresh, like after the first rain fall of spring. It's chilly, so I must be outdoors. My nose stings as it picks up the scent of a bond fire. I smell juicy hot dogs and sticky marshmallows. It smells like a summer night. I hear rustling around me, I'm in a forest and there's something coming towards me through the bushes. I hear voices, then there's light, a cloth has been removed from my eyes and I can see. A crowd of people are around me, they all look like storybook characters. A knight, a king, an executer, the scholar, the princess, the military official, the detective, the prince and the queen. I am the prisoner on trial.
"I found her listening in on our meeting." The knight said.
"We were discussing very important military tactics and we can't allow her to tell anyone." The military official states.
"You say she was listening in, but do you have proof?" Asks the detective.
"I shouldn't need it, I am the king and I won't tolerate anyone so much as accused of spying." Says the king.
"Besides," Starts the queen "She broke into the palace, that's enough to have her punished."
"I say punish her, make her an example to the others." The princess says in a distasteful tone.
"I say let her go."
Everyone turns their heads to look at the prince.
"Son, she broke into our home. We will not feel safe until this ends and this will not end until she is dead and made an example of!" The king argues.
"I stay true to my word father, executer you may leave. As future king and current prince I hear by pardon Clarissa Meredith Montgomery of her crimes against the royal family."
The executer begins to leave but the king calls him back,
"As current king I demand Clarissa's head." The king looks towards his son. "And lock my son up too, this execution will happen, no one can stop it."
"No!" The prince yells as he struggles to break free of the guards. He looks at me with big, scared, watery eyes. So desperate for anything to happen to change what was happening now. Suddenly a horn sounds.
"That's the attack signal!" The military official announces, "The castle is under attack, we must leave at once! Forget the boy and the prisoner, there are thousands of people in that castle with no monarchy's and I control the army. Sir, I advise you, we must leave at once."
The king looks at his son and at the prisoner. They'll die out here on their own anyways, he thought.
"We shall go, my son and the prisoner stay here. Goodbye my son." Says the king and him, the military official, knight, executer and detective all leave at once. The scholar, princess, and queen stay behind. The queen approaches her son and gently strokes his face.
"I love you, son. Do not forget that. We must do this, we have no choice." Tears slowly stream down her face as the pulls her son into a tight hug, he does not hug her back. The scholar comforts the queen and they walk towards the horses that they had come on. The princess looks at her brother.
"Goodbye, brother." She says, but she does not hug him, for she fears if she did she would never be able to let go. The princess mounts her horse and the three turn to leave, but the prince who hadn't said anything since his father left speaks up to them,
"You always have a choice mother."
The group doesn't acknowledge he said anything, but the queen heard him. She gallops of into the night, tears falling down her face and the weight of her sons inevitable death on her shoulders.
