Braylon's POV
"Braylon, are you sure you want to go to school? You can miss another day of you want." Parker asks me for the fifth time today.
I groan. "Yes Parker, I've already missed two days worth of homework. Besides everyone will be at school except you and Zane."
He looks at me. "If you're sure."
"Yes! I'm sure." I tell him once again.
He comes and sits next to me at the kitchen table where I am eating a yogurt and a blueberry bagel.
"Braylon, I only keep asking because I care about you and I don't want you to get hurt." He says in a gentle voice.
"I know and I'm glad you do." I say, my voice just as gentle.
Grayson barges through the kitchen door and plops in his seat.
"Are you at least gonna try to look presentable?" He says, glancing down at my sweatpants and hoody.
"My outfit is perfectly fine, thank you very much." I snap at him. "Leave me alone."
"Yes ma'am." He turns away to his breakfast.
I get up and get my bag and get in the car, waiting for the guys.
My phone rings and the caller ID says Amie.
I answer it. "Hey Amie."
"Oh my Gosh guess what!?" She screams.
I laugh through the phone. "What?"
"Chad asked me out!"
"Chad? Chad Slints? Really?"
"Yeah, we are going on a date this afternoon to Ruby's. I haven't been to that little place in forever."
"Amie that's great."
"Ok,what's wrong? You sound 'blah'."
I can hear the concern in her voice.
"Oh you know, it's the time of the month," I lie.
"Oh, same girl. Same."
I feel guilty for lying to her. I decide to tell her the truth.
"And I'm really nervous for volleyball tryouts after school."
"You? Nervous? Bray, you shouldn't be. You always make the team. Plus Ally is trying out too. But I feel bad for her though. She never makes it."
"Yeah I know. It's a new year, but I heard there is a new girl that plays right side hitter. That's my position."
I look to the left when I hear the dire open.
"Ok Amie, I have to go, see you at school."
I hear a quick 'bye' before I hang up.
Braydon turns the car on as Jayden and Grayson climb in. I have a butterflies in my stomach. I move my leg up and down quickly.
"Braylon, why are you nervous?" Braydon asks.
I turn my head and look at him.
"Tryouts."
Jayden cuts in. "But soccer tryouts aren't for another 2 months."
"Not soccer tryouts, volleyball." I tell them, annoyed that they forgot.
"That's this week? Oh Bray! I'm sorry! I forgot," Jayden says.
"So did the rest of you. Why do you think I brought my sports bag." I say, aggravated.
"We'll be there to cheer you on. You can count on that." Grayson states.
I groan. "No guys, it's only tryouts. I might not even make the team."
Braydon snorts. "Um, you always make the team. For every sport you tryout in. It comes naturally to you."
"Except basketball, hockey, lacrosse." I chuckle.
Grayson agrees.
We pull into school and I get out of the car, to be greeted by Amie and Ally. I get squished in a group hug.
"Guys, I c-can't brea-athe." I whisper.
"Oh right, sorry. Forgot about your near drowning incident." Amie giggles.
Ally booty bumps me. "You ready for tryouts?" She asks excitedly.
I nod slowly.
Her look says she doesn't believe me.
"What's up?" She's asks quietly.
I inwardly groan, she knows me to well.
I sigh. "I heard there's a new girl, who plays my position: right side hitter."
Ally looks thoughtful. "Oh yeah, I've seen her play. She's good."
I heave out a breath. "Thanks Ally. That's very encouraging."
She smiles sheepishly. "Sorry."
I shake my head and laugh, walking into school.~*~*~
We walk out of Integrated Algebra, stooping at my locker. Amie laughs at something Ally said.
I feel tapping on my shoulder and I turn around.
I cry out in shock at who it is.
She waves at me. That little finger wave.
"Hey Braylon. Long time no see."
I hesitate. "Hey Karlee."
"It's good to see you." She says, her voice is as sweet as syrup. That voice makes me mad.
"I would say the same, but it's not." I spat at her.
She puts her hand to her heart, as if what I said offended her. "That's not a thing to say to your best friend, is it?" She sneers.
I laugh. "Best friend? Um yeah, that title got removed from you after what you did."
She ignores my comment, moving onto a new subject. "So, are you trying out for volleyball, like every other year?" She chuckles.
"Yeah, what's it with you?" I hiss at her. Out do the corner of my eye, I see Ally and Amie watching this throw down in shock. Karlee's flock of three girls stand there with smug expressions.
"Oh nothing. I'm trying out too. Right side hitter." She smirks.
I clench my teeth and breathe through my nose.
"Well it's was nice seeing you, best friend. Tah-Tah." I watch her walk away, brown hair swishing.
I stand there for a minutes, whip around and punch the locker as hard as I can.
"Woah, what just happened?" Ally asks, with a worried expression.
I glare at the floor.
"Her name is Karlee Lorkern. I used to go to her school but then moved because of what she did, then here she is now, at my school. Probably to torture me, but it's not gonna work. I'm gonna beat her at her own game."
"Well, don't try to hard. And you should probably get your hand looked at. It's starting to bruise." Amie says.
I look down and see that she is right, but I don't feel anything.
I shake my head stubbornly.
"Let's go to gym. Guys, please don't tell Grayson. Or any of my brothers for that matter. Please."
They share a glance and then nod.
I sigh.
We turn and walk to gym.
