Charlotte woke up to the sound of thunder. She hated to admit it but she has always been afraid of thunder. She has never told anyone and that's probably why they thought she was fearless. Clearly they had the wrong image.
As Charlotte lay in bed trying to drift back to sleep she looked at her clock. The time was 5:00, she has turned 14. Meaning she had to take the Exam and that scared her even more. For once she thought she could take a break from trying to fit into this strange society.
Charlotte decided to get a snack. She tiptoed downstairs to not wake her family. But when she got to the last step she heard her parents talking to a voice she didn't recognize. She leaned her head against the door to listen.
"But what are we going to tell her, she's been looking forward to this ever since she saw our babysitter use magic" said her mother.
"I'm truly sorry, but it looks like your daughter won't be taking the Exam" said the voice. Charlotte slowly moved her head away from the door and slid to the floor in realization.
"Well I better be off, good day to you both." The person talking to her parent's got up from his seat and walked out of the room. He stopped and turned to face Charlotte sitting right outside the door looking at him with tears welling in her eyes.
"So, what's wrong with me?" She asked in a shaky voice. The man stared at her for awhile then looked back at her parents. "I hope to see you again soon" he tipped his hat and walked out of the house, completely ignoring Charlotte's question.
The next day Charlotte watched all the kids in her neighborhood go on the Exam bus. Even though she didn't have to go through the stress she wanted the experience of relating to someone. She flopped onto her bed and began to think of why she was the only one in her family to not have powers. Maybe it has to be activated by something. With her mind filled with thoughts she stood up and grabbed her bag. She was going to head to the Magic Library.
"Hello everyone, I have arrived!" Said Charlotte kicking open the door. She loved going to the library, everyone accepted her for having her head always in a book.
"Well if isn't my favorite costumer" said the lady librarian. "Is there any book you're interested in?" She asked with a bright smile.
"Do you have a book on witch powers?" Asked Charlotte even though she already knew the answer. The librarian beamed.
"Why of course, that section is in the 5th row next to the reading area."
"Thank you!" Said Charlotte trying to give a big smile. She ran to the 5th row and skimmed the bookshelves for the exact book she needed. She stopped at a thick, red book with golden trim. The cover said A Young Witches Guide to Powers. This was just what she needed. Charlotte carried it over to a desk and began to read.
"Hey Charlotte, the library's closing" whispered a voice. Charlotte opened one eye and saw the librarian standing over her.
"Ugh, 3 more minutes" mumbled Charlotte. The librarian shook her head.
"I know it's been a long day, but I wouldn't want to lock you in" said the librarian kindly. Charlotte sighed and stood up from her seat, putting the book into her bag. She walked to the exit without saying a word.
"Thanks for the help" said Charlotte shutting the door behind her before the librarian could reply.
Charlotte walked home in the pouring rain. She saw the Exam bus return and was heading towards her neighborhood. Feeling more down than ever she opened the door to her house.
"Suprise!" Confetti went off in Charlotte's face as she almost fell down in shock. Her family and friends were surrounding her with presents, her mother was holding a giant cake. "Happy Birthday!" They all said at once.
