After the party all Charlotte's friends went home. Her family was sitting around the fireplace eating cake, exhausted from all the fun.
"Where were you today?" Asked her father.
"Oh just doing some research" answered Charlotte taking out the book from her bag.
Her parents looked at her sympathetically. "There's still some time left, maybe you'll get to see your power" they said hopefully. Do they not know I was listening to their conversation earlier?
"Yeah, I guess" replied Charlotte. "That's the spirit, you made a wish didn't you?" Her mother asked. Charlotte rolled her eyes.
"You know candle wishes can't come true, right?" Her parents looked surprised.
"You don't believe in that stuff anymore?"
"Well yeah, I'm 14 after all" said Charlotte standing up to clean her plate. The sound of thunder went off in the distance.
"Another storm tonight" said her father looking out the window. "Charlotte aren't you gonna open your presents?"
"Nah, I'm good" replied Charlotte stretching. "Y'know it's pretty late I should go to bed." Her parents glanced at each other.
"Speaking of which have you seen Serena, we can't find her anywhere." Charlotte facepalmed.
"Seriously, I told her not to run off."
"And tonight's when the Monsters come out" said her mother getting anxious."Why didn't you look for her?" Asked Charlotte. "We thought she'd come back for the party" her father replied. Charlotte looked back and forth at her father and mother. She had to find Serena. Charlotte took a deep breath and ran outside to face the storm.
Clothes soaking wet and hair whipping against her face didn't stop Charlotte. She knew she would regret not finding Serena. Somehow she knew exactly where Serena would hide, underneath the willow tree. And there she was, sitting beside it with her hands covering her ears.
"Serena!" Called Charlotte. "We have to go!" Serena looked up and her eyes brightened.
"Charlotte, you won't believe what I saw last night!" Charlotte didn't have time for this. She grabbed Serena's wrist, suddenly noticing her horrified expression. Charlotte turned around and was eye to eye with a Monster.
