"Welcome to my shitty home." Michael welcomed her to his half furnished apartment. Avery gave him a half smile and got in.
Michael looked at her like she was crazy when she exclaimed that it wasn't so awful. "Trust me, anything is better than home right now." Avery said and stood awkwardly.
"You can sit down. Do anything. Check the fridge. I don't mind." Michael said and Avery smiled thankfully at him, and grabbed an apple from the counter.
~~
"What are you going to do tomorrow?" Michael couldn't help but be curious.Avery sighed and re-adjusted herself on the couch. "If things happen the way I think they are, I'm going to have to be there for my mom. 24/7."
"Why?" Michael found himself asking.
"Because, she's my mom. She might not be the best one. But she does what she can. She works so I'll have a good education and she.. She just does what she can." Avery justified her mother, and Michael nodded.
"Do you want something to change into?" He changed the subject.
"What?" Avery asked, confused.
"You're sleeping here. Remember? We also didn't stop for clothes so..." Michael trailed off.
"Oh yeah, sorry." Michael nodded dismissively and came back with sweats and a Green Day t-shirt. Avery smiled on the sight. "I love Green Day." She commented and reached to get the clothes from Michaels grasp. He internally smiled and she was still looking at him.
"What?" He asked her.
"I do trust you Michael, but I will not change in front of you." Said Avery. Michael blushed faintly.
"Oh, sure. The bathroom is the second door on the left." Avery nodded and turned around. Once she was inside the bathrrom, he let himself question his actiones. Did he really think this was a good idea? He hadn't had a close conection to someone in a long time. He hated being alone but loved it on the same time. Did he want to risk being friends with her? It seemed silly, but he kind of had forgotten what it was like to be a real friend. He heard the bathroom door open and close.
Avery came out with the Greenday shirt that reached her thighs and she was blushing. 'Fuck' Michael thought. 'She's not wearing the sweats.' Michaels heart skips a beat and his eyes goes wide the moment his gaze reaches her legs.
"I'm sorry." She says and hands him the sweats. "They are way too big and don't have a string to adjust." She's blushing and embarrassed.
Michael nods, making sure not to look at her legs. 'Her long, pretty, legs' He mentally slaps himself for thinking that.
"Um, yeah. That's okay don't worry. These are the only ones I have. Do you mind sleeping in that?" Michael asks and Avery shrugs and smiles.
"Sure, I don't mind." She sheepishly responds. "I'm sorry I'm such an inconvenience." She tried apologizing. Michael shakes his head.
"There's no reason to. It's okay. You're not an inconvenience." Michael tried to reassure and Avery just nods her head.
~~
"How dare you?" Michael exclaims, horrified. She shrugs and falls care-free on the couch, resting the controller on her lap.
"I have one in my room and I'm an, occasional player." Avery shrugged and leaned herself more on the sofa.
"Occasional? You just beat me at my favorite video game!" Michael was exasperated and confused. Avery couldn't be more amused, but her eyes felt droopy and she found herself wanting to sleep.
Michael kept talking for 4 minutes when he noticed she had fallen sleep. He looked at her peaceful face and couldn't help but wonder what he would do now.
3 hours passed.
Michael couldn't make himself fall asleep no matter how much he tried. He had left Avery sleep on the couch because she looked incredibly peaceful. He sighed as he saw it was now 1am. He got up, rubbed his face and walked to go get a cup of water from the kitchen. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw a figure standing there. He had almost forgotten Avery had stayed the night. He was about to ask her what she was doing awake when he noticed what she was doing.
She was looking at a painting. And not just any painting.
Her painting.
Avery ran her eyes over every detail of the canvass. Michael felt a sudden rage go through him. One he couldn't explain. He felt like she was looking deep into his soul. Like she could figure him out if she looked at the painting long enough. And it scared him to death.
"What do you think you're doing?" She sat up straight and found his figure in the almost darkness. She couldn't find the right words to respond. She was frozen. Michael stomped over to her and grabbed the great canvass in his hands and turned it around. So she couldn't see it anymore. "I asked you a question." He said roughly, his eyes full of something Avery couldn't put her finer on.
"I was just- I couldn't sleep and it was just here... Michael that painting is-" He cut her off immediately.
"I know I invited you here, but I don't appreciate you snooping around." He harshly said and Avery was at loss of words. She tried explaining but was cut off again. "Go to sleep Avery." He turned around and left to his room, slamming the door on his way out.
Avery was still frozen on the spot. She couldn't bring herself to move. She felt shocked and ashamed. She breathed heavily. After a few seconds she got up and couldn't help but think why that beautiful painting was so important and private to him. She sat down on the couch before letting her body get into sleeping position. She sighed and closed her eyes.
Not helping but wonder what he would act like in the morning.
