Chapter Fourteen – A Day Of Heroes

Soon Hannah and I were the only ones left in the room with Ashley. I turned to her, a face of concern and muttered,

“I-I’m so sorry.” It was nothing more than a choke as I made my way towards her, my feet barely lifting off the floor which made a terrible screeching noise from the friction. I reached out my hand in the offer of consoling her.

“Don’t touch me!” she cried, slapping my hand away even before I touched her. She turned her back on me, holding onto the edge of the bed. Her tears were dripping onto Ashley’s drained face.

“What did I do?” I questioned, walking towards her. I raised an eye brow at her sudden bark. I was at no knowledge to her reasoning to it. My lips trembled once again. It felt like everyone was against me. Before I left for Manchester we were all on good terms; everything was going so well and now suddenly no one desires my presence. With Ashley forever gone (the one and only stable person), Jay ignoring me and not even holding out a hand and now Hannah is brushing me off. What exactly have I done?

“You’re – you’re such a cow!” she screeched, finally turning towards me with rage. She had her hand clenched in fists to the point her knuckles turned white. It seemed that she was ready to attack me.

“Wha-aat?” My voice shaken, I clenched my teeth ready for her attack. I would attempt to protect myself if she decided to hit me, yet I would never hit her back.

“Just leave me alone, okay? You don’t need to be here.” she took a step forward, grinding her teeth together.

“But Ashley’s my friend,” I replied reluctantly, taking a step back in fear.

“I don’t care! Leave before I do something I might regret.” She narrowed her eyes at me. I was about to answer back to her, defending myself until my Dad walked in.

“What the hell is going on here?” His voice boomed, looking from Hannah to me.

“Oh, nothing.” Hannah looked away, down at the floor.

“Well Taz, we should go see your Mum now, shouldn’t we?” Dad offered, leaning against the door of the room.

I nodded in response and with one last glance towards Ashley, I followed him out the room, out the hospital and into his car, knowing there will never be another glance of Ashley in the flesh ever again.

Dad respected the silence we held in the car. He didn’t force a conversation upon me and frankly I just didn’t want to talk. Once Dad parked outside our house, I ran out of the car and knocked vigorously until Mum opened the door. I didn’t stop to look at her, I immediately thrust myself into her, kneeling slightly to bury my face into her shoulder. She held me in her embrace and squeezed my waist tighter into her.

“Baby, it’s okay. I’m here now.” She led me into the house and sat me on the sofa, allowing me to rest my head on her lap. “Oh honey, your eyes are all red.”

I took in deep breaths and thought for a while, staring at the ceiling. “Mum?” It was in a sob.

“Yes, honey?”

“He’s gone.” I was finally able to accept the truth. Finally able to speak the truth. It was much of a telling myself as it was of telling my mother.

“I know, darling.”

“Well, I guess I have to get home.” Dad interrupted our conversation. I turned so I could see him. He was stood by the door, scratching the back of his head. He had no idea what to say or do with this.
