Chapter Twenty-two – A Failed Attempt
"Hey, Dad," I answered the phone on the fifth ring. As I hopped off the chair in the kitchen, my trousers got caught on the edge of the chair resulting in picking up the phone later than I intended to.
"Hey honey, 'sup?"
"Oh, Dad, not again! You do not realise how embarrassing that is," I groaned, although pleased to hear his voice.
"Why? Alec, Mason and Rosy think I'm cool."
"Who are they? Don't tell me you had children without telling me!" I joked, sticking my tongue out as if he could see it.
"No no," he laughed. "You remember the friend who's living with me? They're her children. I'm sure I've mentioned them before."
"Nope. And I thought she only had twins or something my age?" Ever since Ashley's death, Dad and I hadn't spoken much and the family he lives with never really came up for topic. I knew pretty much nothing about them.
"Well yeah, Mason and Rosy are twins your age and Alec just came back from university recently," he explained excitedly.
"Oh, cool. So, why did you call? I need to leave soon for school." I paced up and down the living room the whole time I was on the phone to him, playing with my hair using my free hand.
"Oh, well I have a job to do and I'll be in the area so I thought I would come over in the evening. Pass me over to your mother, I'll check with her. Maybe we can go for Dinner; you, me and your mother." As he spoke I made my way back into the kitchen where Mum sat eating a piece of toast.
"It's Dad."
She took the phone and thanked me with a full mouth, a few crumbs of toast falling onto the table out of her mouth. She swallowed the rest and spoke into the phone.
"I'm off now, Mum. Bye." I picked up my pack lunch box that she left on the table and began to walk away until she called me back.
"No kiss?" She questioned, pouting her face. I giggled at her bad attempt of a sad face and kissed her cheek. I smiled at her; it was just like the old times. Today was the first time in a long time that Mum and I had breakfast together. These days she left early but today, she hadn't for some reason.
Droplets of rain hit me as I exited the house, the sun peeking out from the thick clouds. I stopped outside of the door to place my bag on my head, protecting my hair from the rain, although it was poor protection. As I continued to walk, I heard the creak of a door opening and at first I thought it was Mum but when I turned around, Jay walked out from next door. I sighed and quickened my pace.
"Taz, hey Taz!" He shouted after me. That's when I broke into a run, sprinting through the streets.
I didn't need any more trouble from him. He already made it clear how he felt when he sent me the text on Saturday. He's been trying to gain my attention ever since but for the past three days I have been ignoring him. It's a shame it's a Wednesday and we have PE together, there's no way to avoid him for long. I slowed down once I made it through to the gates and turned to my left, heading for the library. I couldn't stay out where everyone's judgemental eyes stare at me.
