Chapter five - Jay The ballerina

Jay and I ditched the others and made our way home. Wednesday s after school was our day after all; a day where Jay and I ditch our usual plan hanging with the others to spend time together. This day has transformed into a tradition ever since we began secondary school, even Jessica has come to recognise that this is a day that she cannot disturb. She may have Jay but he wouldn't be stupid enough to quit this 'bonding' day for her, right?

"So what's it I have to do to repay you?" Jay asked as we approached my house and halted outside. He removed his arm off my shoulder as I detached my own from around his waist.

"Wait and see init, you'll find out very soon. By the way, you can't back out now since you promised!" Once again, my evil laugh erupted from within.

"Fine, let me drop my bag off and change out of this uniform. See ya' in five yeah."

"Oh, don't bother changing."

"Why? Are you planning on taking a pic of me naked or something? I have a girlfriend you know, don't think she'd appreciate it much," Jay pointed out. I rolled my eyes.

"As if! That body is nothing compared to mine," I teased, sticking my tongue out at him. Granted: I have pictured him naked in my head before and maybe in dreams once or twice, but this is not something you'd tell the person you like. Especially the person who doesn't like you back.

"Whatever! Be back in two then." He hopped off into the direction of his house while I walked into my own.

I stumbled into the immaculately clean kitchen, completely different from the disaster that was this morning. I noticed a yellow post it note in the centre of the rounded table and picked it up.

Sorry sweetie, I won't be home until late tonight. I've got work until five and then I'll go over to Glenda's to change in time for the date. Foods in the oven, just heat it up. Its shepherds pie your fav. Make sure you study and keep jay out of the house for that hour. Love you, don't burn the house down

Her handwriting is very miniature and mostly unreadable, but through the years I have come to recognise and understand it. How typical of my mother to consider changing in time for her date at least two hours earlier than the date has to commence since I doubt many go on dates before seven pm. Glenda and my mother have had years of friendship, gaining the title of an aunty to me since Glenda has been a constant presence in my life (ever since I was born) that I know nothing better. Both my parents having no sisters, I don't have the knowledge or emotion that given to a real aunty so Glenda is enough to compensate. Also as she is the assistant head of my school I usually get off lightly with 'serious crimes' known to the school such as bunking many classes.

Around the post it note were several plates stacked with cup cakes all iced with pink or blue frosting and decorated with sprinkles. At least twelve cup cakes per plate. Jay burst into the kitchen, just as I asked still in his uniform, tossing the keys he had onto the counter by the sink before turning to me.

"Just 'cause my mother thought it necessary to give you spare keys, she's made it clear only to use it in emergencies, it doesn't mean you could come barging into the house whenever you like!" I tried keeping a straight face but with the way Jay was giving the cup cakes the desired looks, I could help breaking into a giggle, however he seemed reluctant to reach out for one. "Go ahead and eat, they're real you know."

"For all I knew this could've been an emergency. What if someone sprang out of nowhere and tried killing you in your own house. Have you thought of that, Taz?" Although he was responding to me, his eyes were still glowing at the cup cakes in front. He licked his lips before he grabbed one and placed the whole thing into his mouth.
