I stare in horror as their two heads emerge from the sheets, both looking tasseled and confused at the sudden outburst. Charlotte hurriedly manages to cover up her naked body just as Alex rolls off of her. He grabs his jeans from the floor and struggles to quickly put them back on.
"Jordan I can explain-"
I could already feel my legs darting for the door. My breath hitched in my lungs as I struggled aimlessly for air. Tears streamed down my face as I pushed carelessly through the crowd, not even bothering over the rude comments that were thrown my way when I accidently stepped on a foot, or sent a girl tumbling over. It felt like my heart was shattering with every move I made.
I catch myself from almost tumbling head first down the stairs. Gripping onto the railing, I take in a deep breath, managing to hold off a few tears. I knew that my parents would be downstairs, probably looking for me as the cake was being brought out. Everyone singing happy birthday in confusion when I was nowhere to be found. But it didn't matter. All I wanted to do was sneak out of here without attracting any attention to myself. Maybe I could find a nice hotel to stay in for the night, somewhere that I could concentrate, get my head on straight. Anywhere was better than here.
No one seemed to notice as I made my way silently through the crowd. Keeping my head down, I could see the front door approaching before me.
I reach out to grab the handle and slowly turn it open, giving a squeak as the cold September air blows into the room. It rushes past my bare skin as I step quietly out into the cold of the night.
"Jordan?" I hear a voice call my name. "Jordan where are you going?"
I don't look back as I prance out the door, hearing shouts of my name get louder and louder until I was too far away and they all vanished at once. I could feel my heart hammering in my chest. My legs pumped faster and faster until I was certain I was out of sight.
I take a sudden turn into an alley and instantly curse at myself, realizing that I had nothing. No money, no cellphone, how was I even going to get a hotel?
I sit down on the ground, panting for breath as I put my head in my hands. A small sob started to choke it's way through my throat. I let the tears stream down my face once more.
"What am I going to do?" I ask myself as I look up to the sky in hope that this would all go away, convincing myself that it was all just one huge nightmare. In a minute, I'd wake up and everything would be fine. It'd be my 18th birthday all over again. I would eat cake and laugh until my stomach hurt. I would get to dance with Alex while everyone watched in awe. My parents would be smiling, so proud of the young woman I had become. I'd be nice and respectful and uncaring that I didn't even know half the people at my party. Because it didn't matter. It was my night. My one special night.
Now, it was all ruined. And there was nothing I could do to change that.
"Hello?" I hear someone say, causing me to lift my head up, only to see a boy around my age making his way into the alley.
He glances around as his eyes travel to meet mine, a look of deep concern appearing on his face.
"Are you okay?" he asks, starting to make his way over to me.
Quickly wiping my tears, I manage to give a slight nod, pulling my knees up to my chest in attempt to hide my face.
"Are you sure?" he asks again, coming even closer.
I tense up, easing away from him as best as I could.
"I'm fine," my voice cracks, causing me to mentally curse at the sound of my weakness. "Just leave me alone."
