He let her go. He allowed Clara to go knowing she needed some time alone. He remembered when he had been told he was dead, it wasn't exactly a merry occasion. At least he had been told by one of his friends, howeverClara had been told accidentally by an idiot.
Rhys was off sulking in a corner in the men's dorms whilst Toby laid in his cot, racking his hands through his hair angrily. When he had been assigned to help a new batie, he had no idea they would have this much of an effect on him. Those three days taking care of the sleeping Clara had felt almost like a dream. He felt alive again, taking care of someone.
He'd always wished he had been chosen to be with the healing division, he vaguely remembered his father being a doctor. He'd been surprised when the boss asked him to take care of the new batie, that he didn't trust anyone else but Toby.
Zoe and Tina had already come to explain to him how Clara was now in the females dorm sleeping it off. He wanted to go to her but those dorms were off limits and so was she.
"Stop brooding you baby," Adam said coming into the room. "Get up."
Toby waited to hear Rhys mumble something but instead Adam spoke up again.
"I'm talking to you, Toby. Get up and go find her."Toby didn't sit up. Adam had been Toby's first friend, the one who told him he had died and who had been there for him ever since. He was a warrior like him and they had seen a lot together.
"Go away, Adam." Is all he said. "Don't you have someone else to go and annoy?"
Adam stuck out his tongue and crossed his arms. "Ha ha. I'm serious, get up before you become the mattress."Rhys made a whimpering sound, gaining both their attention. He was laying on his cot with his back to them.
"You alright, Rhys?" Adam asked, gently shaking his shoulder. Rhys' head snapped to the side suddenly and Adam cried out, falling down into his butt. Rhys' eyes glowed red which could only mean one thing...Adam scrambled to his feet. "Crap. Crap!" He yelled.
Toby sprung off of the cot, landing in a protective roll and jumping to his feet. As he did so, he whipped out a short sword he always kept tucked away and swung it at the demon.Demons were able to take the bodies of others. Not humans, since they weren't able to go down to earth, only angles could. What Toby and the rest of them were were neither angles nor demons. They were basically humans without souls.
"How did one get in here?" Adam yelled.
Rhys-or the demon-had begun hissing as it perched atop the cot. Toby lashed down, catching it in the shoulder before it jumped off the cot and into the floor in front of Adam who was weapon less."ADAM!" Toby cried.
Adam's eyes widened just before the demon slashed at his chest with extended black claws. Ruby red blood welled from his shirt as he crashed to the side with a sickening thump.
Blood rushed in Toby's ears as he watched his friend fall. Next thing he knew, the demon was coming at him.
The demon wrapped his arms around Toby like a bear hug, pushing him down to the floor with his weight. Toby's head struck the stone ground and he tasted blood in his mouth.
Rhys was gone now, Toby knew by the red glow of his eyes. Toby hadn't known Rhys very well, a few years max. But that didn't mean it didn't hurt to see him gone. The demon brought a long black claw down towards Toby's throat who closed his eyes-
Nothing happened.
Toby opened his eyes again to see the demons eyes wide with shock. The next minute, his body went limp and Toby was able to push him off. Toby's chest heaved as he laid there, having been so close to death.
Standing in front of him was Zoe, holding a long sword and looking fierce in her black clothes. She extended a hand to help him up which he gladly took.
"Adam." Was the first thing he said and rushed to his friends side.
Adam was grey of face and breathing shallowly. Toby's heart broke for him. He had a deep cash along his chest, leaking blood all over the stone floor."Adam? Adam can you hear me?" Toby asked gently then louder and more desperately.
Adams eyes slowly fluttered open. He groaned. "Damn that hurts like a b-" he stopped short when his eyes landed on Zoe. The girl he had been crushing on for as long as Toby had known him. Adam managed to smile despite his deadly wound. "Hey beautiful."Zoe's face had lost all blood in her shock, but she managed to say, "Hey ugly."
That made Adam laugh, causing more blood to leak from his wound.
Toby put an arm under his head."Come on, we have to take you to an infirmary." Toby turned to Zoe. "Get Craig then send for Tina. I don't want anyone else knowing about this except us."
"Your not gonna tell David?" Adam asked. Toby really wished he'd shut up before he killed himself from talking. That was so something Adam would do. "Or Bella?"Toby as silent for a moment. "Not yet, but I will. They will figure out a demon got in sooner or later and will want answers. But right now, I just want to make sure your alright."
"Oh, Toby, there was actually a reason I came here." Zoe said and Toby turned again to her. "Craig is with Clara. She passed out earlier and won't wake up."
