Rose wakes up and the room is blurry and spinning a little. She closes her eyes again and the room steadies itself and becomes clearer when she opens them again. The light is shining through the window; she had made it through the night without waking up again. She was surprised seeing the pain that was shooting through her back was almost unbearable. She can hear whispers outside the closed door which reminds her of the conversation she had with Gally the night before and Newt sleeping in the chair next to her. Rose realizes she's the only one in the room. She decides to focus on the whispers outside the door and see if she can identify anyone or understand anything that's being said. She makes out one of the voices immediately. Newt. Rose could recognize that accent anywhere. Once she hears Newt's voice, she doesn't bother focusing on the voices anymore.
"Newt." Rose says, but it comes out as a soft whisper. She hasn't seemed to regain her voice. She didn't think he could hear her but he came in just seconds later, his face full of relief.
"You're awake." Newt says, his voice full of joy. Rose just nods as she tries to sit up. Her back is making it hard. Newt gently pushes her shoulder back onto the pillow. "You need to stay laying down, ya?" Newt's face changes to concern.
"No, it's okay." Rose coughs a little, sending a shock down her spine. She winces and Newt raises his eyebrows, telling her to stop but she doesn't listen. She eventually sits all the way up but has to lean forward, careful not to put too much pressure on her back.
"Buggin' Griever got ya." Newt says, his face stern but still showing hints of worry. Rose realizes him saying that, means he doesn't know Gally already told her what happened.
"I know. Gally told me when I woke up last night." Rose gives Newt a weak smile and reaches for the water. With her back in such bad condition, she isn't able to reach it and needed Newt to get it for her. "Thanks," Rose whispers. "for staying here last night with Gally."
"Of course." Newt smiles wider. "I'm glad you're okay though. Lucky ya didn't get bloody stung." The look of relief is back on Newt's face.
"Yeah, right." Rose can't help but smile because she knew she made it. Had she been even a little bit slower or fallen, she could be going through The Changing right now. She isn't taking her back pain for granted. Rose moves the blankets off of her and puts her feet on the floor.
"What're you doing?" Newt asks, his expression turning stern again.
"Getting up?" Rose questions as if it were a dumb question. Rose knows Newt knows her better than to just lay around all day.
"You just got buggin' attacked by a bloody Griever! You need to bloody rest." Newt raises his voice just enough to get his point across. Rose realizes this is why he's probably stuck around. Rose doesn't really listen to anyone besides Newt. She really doesn't listen to Jeff or Clint since she was a Med-Jack before she became a Runner. She was even the Keeper of the Med-Jacks. Rose doesn't feel like she should have to listen to them, she knows what's best for her and to her, getting work done is what's best.
"I have work to do." Rose says, but doesn't try and get up. She stays seated, waiting for Newt to respond.
"Minho did your work from yesterday. It's too late for you start runnin' that bloody Maze." Newt leans forward and rests his hands on Rose's shoulders to make his point. Almost like she wasn't grasping how bad her injury was.
"Can't I just hang out around the Glade?" Rose starts pleading with Newt, knowing she might be able to get him to cave if she begs a little.
"Minho is out runnin', Gally's workin' and I got work to do. Who ya gonna bloody talk to?" A grin creeps onto Newt's face, indicating Rose was going to be able to convince him.
