Teresa pushed the button and everything became dead silent, nothing moved. It was as if everything around them had completely died. A few seconds pass and a sound filled the air; a sliding door opening at the end of the hallway. Just as quickly as the sounds had stopped, the Grievers seemed to completely shut down. They stopped moving, their spikes went back into their blubbery skin, their lights went off, and they released Rose and Thomas. They both scooted away from them, staring down the hall where the door had opened.
"You did it, Chuck. We were so worried about the stupid code words, we didn't think to look around for something to push – the last piece of the puzzle." Teresa said.
Thomas let out a chuckle in disbelief. "She's right, Chuck – you saved us man!" Thomas held enthusiasm in his voice as he got to his feet and walked to Chuck and Teresa. "I told you we needed you! Chuck's a shucking hero!" Thomas embraced the two in a group hug while Rose sat, staring down the hall but not at the door. Her head wasn't focused on the door. If their Grievers shut down, so should the ones above them. Newt should have been jumping down by then.
"What about the others?" Teresa whispered, as if she knew what Rose was thinking. No one answered. The three of them just turned to see Rose bring her legs up to her chest, not moving her stare.
"C'mon Newt." Rose whispered to herself as she held onto a glimpse of hope. Thomas came to her and put a hand on her shoulder, waiting.
As if to be on cue, someone feel through the Hole. Rose scrambled to her feet but her heart sunk just slightly when she saw Minho. She was relieved to see him, but he wasn't Newt. She felt a little guilty knowing she wished Minho was Newt in that moment but she couldn't control herself.
"Minho! Are you okay? What about everybody else?" Thomas ran up to him, starting his twenty question routine Rose had seemed to grow custom to.
"I'm sure he's okay." Teresa said with a half smile.
"Yeah, yeah." Rose nodded. "I know he is." Rose lied as she hid her fear. She walked away from Teresa and met Minho and Thomas in the middle of the hall, away from the Hole entrance.
"We lost a ton of people... It's a mess of blood up there...then they all just shut down." Minho explained. Rose looked him over and he was covered in scratches and seemed to have been stabbed a few times but no one would know by the way he was talking. He didn't act as if he were in a bit of pain but sadness was laced his words. They had lost friends in a gory fight. Being anything but sad would have been insane. Regardless, Minho's sadness lowered Rose's hope. "Rose?" Minho said, snapping Rose out of her train of thought, making her raise her eyebrows at him. "Newt's-" Minho was cut off by the sound of another body coming down the Hole.
"Hey, Rosie." Newt said as he got to his feet.
Rose smiled the widest she ever had. "Newt!" She screamed as she ran towards him. Newt wrapped his arms around her and picked her up, burying his head into her shoulder. "You're okay." Rose held her smile as relief filled her voice.
"I'm okay." Newt nodded as he put her down, smiling. He grabbed Rose's face and kissed her hard, as if they hadn't been together in years. Rose about melted knowing he was safe, in her arms, their lips connected again. Happiness is the only thing she could feel in that moment. The two pulled away and rested their foreheads together before placing their fingers together and walking to the group.
As they approached, a few other Gladers came down the Hole. First Frypan, then Winston and a few others. About fourteen Gladers had come down the Hole making the head count just twenty-one. All of them were completely covered in human blood and Griever goo. Their clothes completely torn.
