It obviously seemed like Gerard was less effected by the homophobe in the park. Frank was troubled by it. He couldn't stop thinking about the hatred in the voice and the eyes of that man.
But he pushed it into the back of his mind.
It didn't resurface until he and Gerard went to the fair on a date.
They walked around, deciding what to do first.
"Are you hungry?" Frank asked.
"I dunno," Gerard replied. "Are you?"
"I dunno, let's do the rides first then we'll eat so we don't puke all over everyone else."
"Sounds like a plan. How does the Ferris wheel sound to you?"
"Great." Frank gazed into his boyfriend's lovely hazel eyes. "Let's go." They made their way to the line and stood hand in hand, ignoring the odd looks given to them from various people. Frank wanted badly to kiss his boyfriend, but in front of all these people, he assumed it wouldn't end well. He planned to kiss him at the top of the Ferris wheel.
Finally, it was their turn to get onto the ride. Gerard turned to Frank.
"Sorry, you must be this tall to ride this ride," he said, gesturing to a wooden post.
"Very funny," Frank said sarcastically. The two clambered into the car and the ride operator slammed the bar down.
When all the cars were filled with people, the ride began.
Frank recalled his plan to kiss his boyfriend at the top, but fell victim to temptation.
He grabbed Gerard by his face with both hands. He kissed his boyfriend directly on the mouth. His lips tasted like sweat and summer. Gerard was startled at first but now leaned into the kiss, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend, twirling his fingers through his hair as he always did. Frank framed his face with his hands, not letting him out. The sun was going down, the sky half bright orange and half deep blue. He wanted this moment to last forever, to stay kissing this perfect human for the rest of eternity.
The ride slammed to a halt, jolting them both out of their trance. Frank looked over the edge to see the operator letting people off.
"Damn it," he murmured. Their car came to the bottom. When they climbed out, they walked away toward the food stands, holding hands.
Frank glanced back. The operator was exchanging the keys to the ride with another. He then came storming toward the two of them. He shoved Frank against a wall.
"Hey you faggies," he growled. "I don't want the two a' you makin' out on my goddamn ride." His breath reeked of cigarette smoke. He let go of Frank's shoulders on the wall and made as if he was walking away, but turned back and threw a fist at Frank's face. He kicked him to the ground. Gerard rushed to help him, but the ride operator's tattooed fist came flying at him. It hit him square in the jaw, then in the eye, then in the nose. Frank heard the noise of cracking bone. The operator lifted him off the ground and hit him in the nose, the eye, the lip. He threw him to the ground again.
"Don't you fags lemme see you on each other near me again. You understand me?" Frank couldn't move. "You understand?" He nodded. He glanced at his boyfriend. He was unmoving. His eyes were shut. "Get outta here," the operator muttered. Frank pulled himself off the ground, searching his mind frantically for what to do about Gerard. He'd have to get some water, then a hospital.
He rushed to a food stand to buy a cup of ice water.
"Dude," the vendor drawled. "What's with your face man?"
"I'll give you that question to ask yourself if you don't get me my fucking water."
"Okay dude, no worries." The vendor put his hands up defensively. He returned with a styrofoam cup of water. "Free of charge, man. It's just water." Frank rushed away back to his boyfriend without a word. He splashed some on his bruised, swollen face. Gerard's blackened eyelids fluttered open.
"The fuck happened?" His nose had a stuffed up sound, and was still bleeding heavily.
"Babe, we're going to the hospital," Frank said. He lifted his boyfriend up.  "Can you stand?"
"Yeah,I can stand, my legs aren't broken."
"Your nose is, though. Come on." The two made their way to the gates and found the car.
Frank drove to the closest hospital. He was admitted and almost immediately.
After several hours, Frank was finally allowed to see his boyfriend. His face was still bruised badly. Frank drifted to his bedside and planted a light kiss on each bruise.
"You know, I'd do the same for you," said Gerard, "but I can't move my head." He laced his fingers behind Frank's head and pulled his face down. He put his swollen lips on each purpled, bruised area on his face. Frank bent down and kissed Gerard's lips lightly and cautiously.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
