Equine Passports

Horse owners are responsible for making sure they have an up to date passport for each individual. Passport legislation relates to horses, ponies, donkeys & zebra.

The passport contains details about the horse – appearance, age, breed/type, colour, identichip details & any medications given.

1. Describe the aim(s) of horse passports & why they are important?

The aims of the passport are to make sure that the horse is given medication that complies with what it is going to end up becoming (i.e food), it is important so that no horse end up be treated for something with a certain medication and then it get used for human consumption as it could make humans ill.

Equine – Medicine Controls

The list of "essential" medicines for the treatment of horses was updated in February 2013 (Commission Regulation 122/2013). This lists drugs that do not have marketing authorisations in food producing horses but that can be used with horses that are considered to be food producing animals (passport section IX not signed) provided that –

· The presribing cascade is followed

· Their use is followed by a 6 month withhold period before the animal enters the food chain

· Their use must be recorded in the horse's passport

3. What are the record keeping requirements for these drugs?

A. In horses excluded from the food chain (by declaration in section IX of the passport). That the horse vaccination and that the vet is required to keep clinical records

a. In horses classified as food producing animals (where section IX of the passport is not signed or where no passport (it is available). All medication needs to be record (essential medication) and needs to state the withdrawal period.

4. When asked to administer, prescribe or dispense drugs for use in a horse, list the procedure which should be followed

Then you should ask for the passport and look at section 9 and then give the medication depending on whether or not they are being used for human consumption and satisfy yourself that the passport belongs to the horse in question.

5. Regardless of whether a horse is regarded for human consumption or not, what should be recorded in the horse's passport?

The period between the last dose and to reaching the maximum residue limit.

7. If a horse is treated with a drug considered to be on the essential substances list, how long is the withdrawal period?

The withdrawal period is 6 months

8. Phenylbutazone is a common Non-steroid Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID) for the management of orthopedic conditions in horses. Can you describe when this product MUST NOT be used?

You can't use this product when the animal is going to end up being part of the food chain or you don't know the status of the horse. If the horse has a blood condition.

If section 9 is not signed and the horse required treatment and the vet has to sign it. 


The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) relates to the movement of pets into the UK. A Pet Passport can be obtained from a Veterinary Surgeon.
