Both will have consultations with clients
The VN cannot diagnose a condition so within their consult they can offer advice and perform procedures such as clipping nails, EAG, SO.
Both will perform surgery
VN can perform surgical procedures as permitted in schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966
Both will host clinics
The VS clinic would be for general diagnosis and ongoing RP checks. The VN clinic will be more regular and help support the client and pet (eg diabetic clinics, arthritis clinics)
Both will care for in patients
The VS is responsible for the overall care of the patient and with the formulation of a treatment plan. The VN will adhere to the VS instructions and may also create their own nursing plan.
Both will be involved in radiography
The vet will instruct the VN as to what view are required and generally the VN will be responsible for producing the radiographs. The VS will then make the diagnosis.
Both will attend regular CPD
Both VS and VN need to partake in a minimum amount of hours of CPD. The number of hours does differ between VN and VS however.
Both will attend staff meetings
Both should attend regular staff meetings. The practice may also have separate meetings for VS and VN to attend themselves.

Without formal qualification or status may be called animal nursing assistants (the BVNA approved term) or veterinary care assistants. These lay staff have usually undertaken some basic veterinary nurse training but are limited by law as to the procedures they may undertake on animals. They work alongside qualified vets and veterinary nurses to provide care and support to animal patients and their owners. May perform reception duties.
