Understanding the principles of Isolation nursing

As a lot of LO4 has been covered elsewhere (unit 305, 304 and 306) it shouldn't take us too long.

Common Infection

Presentation

Incubation Period

Canine Parvovirus

Vomiting, Anorexia, depression, lethargy, profuse hemorrhagic diarrhoea, dehydration

3-5 days

Canine Distemper

Pyrexia, nasal discharge, hyperkeratosis of the pads, coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea

7-21 days

Canine Leptospirosis

Pyrexia, vomiting, shock, interstitial nephritis and hepatitis

Up to 7 days

Infectious canine hepatitis

Anorexia, pyrexia, vomiting, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, photophobia, petechia and jaundice

5-10 days

Kennel Cough

Dry hacking cough with or without a terminal wretch

5-7 days

Rabies

2 changes – furious and dumb

Furious – hyper excitability, biting, snapping, frothing at mouth

Dumb – timid and affectionate then leading to paralysis and ataxia

Between 1 and 6 months

Feline Upper respiratory Tract Disease (FURTD)/cat flu

Sneezing, oral ulceration, chronic stomatitis, pyrexia, depression
