Maya knew me too well. If I was standing in a further distant, she could still make out how I was feeling. "Are you okay Riles?" She noticed my sad look.
"I'm sorry, I'm just nervous with high school. The thought of it just made me shiver." I looked down to the grey pavement as we walked back to my place.
"Look Riley, if it's a sad ending. Then, it isn't over yet." She held both of my shoulders, causing me to stop walking. She looked into my eyes and smiled sweetly at me. "High school is just a new beginning where we can still bring our memories from the past and make new ones."
I smiled back.
"So, going to high school is a new beginning." I asked, more like a statement after a few minutes of silence, when we started walking again.
"Yup." Maya nodded, her head popped forward like a duck, causing me to laugh at her movements. But she didn't say anything about it. "So aren't you gonna tell Lucas? You know, before another girl grabs him before you have the chance to." I did a hand gesture as I said it, making her giggle.
"Umm.. I don't know, I was thinking about it but I don't think I'm," she paused to find the right word before saying, "ready." She looked at me with dazzling eyes that could make you fall for her.
She's like a witch, putting a love spell on you.
"Well, you better hurry before he finds someone more interesting than you. Not that I'm saying you're uninteresting." I quickly added the last sentence before I offend anyone.
The warm breeze blew our hair, making everything feel easy. It felt like the wind was blowing our problems away. Well at least my problem. And it was a big one. It wasn't about taking a big step to high school. It wasn't about the solicitude feeling I have for the fact that if we grew apart. It was about a secret that Maya doesn't know, that no one knows. And they never will.
I walked a little faster than Maya which resulted in her catching up with me. "Okay fine!" She whisper-hissed. Her nervous face made it way funnier. "If I want Lucas to notice me then I need your help." She pleaded.
"Okay. But on one condition." I raised my pointing finger. She eyeballed my finger like I was about to do a trick and she didn't want to miss any of it.
"You have to reach my house first before I do!" I took off, running like I was on fire, running like I was desperate to find the loo.
I could hear her giggles as she ran behind me, trying to push me aside so that I wasn't blocking her way. I laughed when I realised that my flying hair got into her face. At one point we toppled down onto the ground, laughing our butts off, not worrying if we have scratches or wounds. Oddily, there weren't.
This is what I was talking about - memories that I didn't want to loose. Memories that I didn't want to leave behind. Memories that I didn't want to forget. And then I felt lucky to have Maya by my side to remind me all of those things.
