Prologue

Our school, Bright Wood High's bell rings. After a long and exhausting day, the bell finally goes. I decide to take the bus home. I admit, after being shouted at in front of the whole class about accidentally poisoning the lab- test frogs, I never want to be seen again.

     Chapter 1

I am in front of our lawn and stare at our house. What would happen if Steven died?

Where would I live? On the café' corner? Not too shabby but still. Steven is my only relative, my big brother.

Five years ago we were on our way to the family farm. I guess dad was under the influence of alcohol and mum was innocently napping in the front seat. I remember staring out the window looking at all the stallions! Just like the horses in Indiana Jones!

That was when I heard the windshield cracking. Next moment I was in the most uncomfortable hospital bed ever. They said that dad drove right into the toolshed.

Apparently a pitchfork flew right through mother's chest.

Well... dad? He busted his head and never came back from planet death.....

Steven was in a coma for almost 2 months. The doctors discovered a life threatening matter called cancer. They found it too late and Steven was already diagnosed. They could treat it though, and still do. Me... Well I'm in a wheelchair! That's when everyone started judging me.

I open the front door, creaking and a whole lot of termites on vacation! Gross, I know. But it's just too expensive to replace.

The first thing I notice is the smell of dinner!

''Steven!" I call out wanting to know where my brother is but there is no answer. What if...... No, that can't happen, it just can't!

''Steven, are you here? Please answer me!" His voice. It replies.

"Relax, I'm in the kitchen making our dinner, Isabelle!"

I finally have to say something.

''Oh, sorry! For a moment I thought..." I trail off because I do not want to think about it.

''Isabelle, stop being negative! It's not good for you. Everything is gonna' be great, you'll see!" I think to myself what he just said and finally reply,

"Great? Do you really think that everything is going to be great? Of course you do! Have you been out there, seen how the world has fallen apart? Poverty, pollution, theft, murder, racism, war and the list goes on." Steven looks kind of anxious and is left speechless.

Then he says something quietly, ''Isabelle, I know what is out there but miracles do happen. Do you remember what mum used to say? 'You will keep in perfect peace Him whose mind is steadfast because He trusts in you. Isaac 26:3' ".
