Chapter 2

I sat in the kitchen, frustrated at my homework that I had decided to do tonight. My science homework was okay, my history was a piece of cake, but math was kicking my butt. I couldn’t remember whether to use Distance Formula or the Slope Intercept Form. I sighed, running my hands through my hair, and shut my book in frustration. My stomach growled at me in agony. Maybe if I ate something it would help me concentrate better.

I got up and headed for the cupboards. We had tuna, and that was practically it. I sighed again. I’m going to have to go to the store soon. I grabbed a can and decided that a tuna sandwich would be good. I opened the fridge to grab the Mayo when I noticed we were almost out of milk too. I let out frustrated breath and closed the fridge.

When I was about to open the can of tuna, the phone rang. I placed the can opener down on the counter and walked over to the phone. I picked it up and answered with a nice and sweet hello.

“Hello is Raven Elmoure home?” a deep, husky voice asked. My brows furrowed together in confusion.

“This is she.” I answered politely. The man, I presumed, chuckled on the other line.

“I am Bruce Willis, an administrator at the State University. I have been informed that you are interested in attending here for college.” He said. My heart quickened its pace, and my knees almost gave out. I was practically smiling from ear to ear.

“Yes sir, I’m interested.” I said, trying not to sound too excited to be hearing from him.

“That’s great. I hope to meet you soon. I called to inform you on a tour we are holding on Saturday. We will need to know if you would like to join us.” He said. I nearly jumped and cheered with joy.

“Yes, sir, I’ll be there.” I said. I heard him chuckle.

“I’m glad to here. We will be meeting right out front of the main building. We will be starting at 10:00 a.m., and we will be treating you to lunch. You are allowed to bring one person with you. I will see you there.” He said. I nearly squealed. Sure it was only a tour, but meant so much more to me. It meant that they were actually considering me to attend. They don’t invite many students from Vigil High because of its poor reputation, so this was a very big deal for me.

“See you there sir.” I said.

“Alright, good-night then.” He said.

“Thank you. Good-night to you, too.” I replied, and we hung up. “YES!” I shouted, and jumped up and down. I did a happy dance around the kitchen even my own mom would laugh at. Just imagine me if they offered me a scholarship.

Mom had to work today, so I invited Derek to come with me on the tour. He wasn’t very interested in going to this college, but he knew it was important to me, so he agreed to come along. We were both dressed in what other people call “church clothes”. I was actually wearing a skirt, which was a weird feeling. I had my hair down, but it didn’t cover my face as it usually would.

I knew people would stare, but not even that would bring me down. Derek parked the car, and like a gentlemen, helped me out of the car. He smiled at me; only because he’s only occasionally seen me all dressed up.

We walked up to the front of the main building to find a group of people mingling. There was a line of table were people were lined up, talking to people sitting at the tables as they attached different colored wrist bands to their wrists. The sign above the tables read; CHECK IN.

Derek and I walked over to the first table and saw another sign that said; A-C. It must be alphabetical. We walked to the next table were the sign read: D-G. As Derek and I waited patiently in line, I looked over the campus. It was big, and busy, with buildings scattered around. The landscaping was just breath taking, and everyone here had a smile on their face. It was so beautiful here.
