Chapter 4
BEEP BEEP! BEEP BEEP!
I groaned as I rolled over and shut my alarm clock off. I opened my eyes to check the time. 6:45. I sighed, and sat up in bed rubbing my face. I hate it when I’m woken up from a dreamless sleep, because I rarely ever get those. I groaned once more, and somehow made my way to the bathroom.
I turned on the shower, and stripped my clothes off and stepped into the shower. The water helped me wake up, and cleared my mind as I washed my hair. The events of last night’s dinner came flooding back inside my head. I rubbed the back of my neck, suddenly feeling sour. Then I noticed the blood running down my legs.
“Just great.” I said sarcastically. What a perfect day to start my period. No wonder I’ve been so cranky.
After the shower I headed back to my room to get dressed. I tied my hair up in my towel to dry it, and put my clothes on, pulling out a pad. I’m so glad I had gone to the store yesterday. The memory of the trip to the store brought the thought of Eli back.
Who was really? Why was he so nice to me? I mean, others stare at me and do their best to avoid me, while he just treats me like – like I’m human. The thought of that made my cheeks grow warm. I shook my head and continued to get ready, placing my mask over my scar.
When I was done, I walked out into the kitchen to find mom sitting at the table, drinking some coffee. She was still half asleep, and droopy eyed. I figured she got up this early because of me, but I still wished she save her energy. I fixed myself a bowl of cereal and sat in front of her. She smiled at me as I ate.
“Good morning, sweetie.” She said.
“Morning.” I replied.
“You ready for school?” she asked. I nodded, and she took a sip of coffee. “You have everything?” she asked. I nodded again. She rested her head on her fist as she watched me eat, and played with her coffee.
“Do you think you’ll be going into work today?” I asked. Mom smiled, and nodded. The rest of the time was quiet as I finished up my bowl. As I got up to put it away, mom got up and set her coffee near the sink.
“Raven?” she began. I looked up at her expectantly. She stared at me for a few moments, and then smiled. “Have a good day at school, okay?” she said. I nodded, and she leaned forward, kissing my forehead before going back to sleep. I watched her go into her room, and wondered what was that about.
When I saw the time on the microwave I didn’t have time to wonder anymore. I quickly grabbed my sweater, bag, and house key, and ran out the door. The sky was bright, and sunny, but I didn’t have time to savor it. If I didn’t get a move on, I was going to be late.

I went to my locker, congratulating myself for getting here on time. As I opened up my locker, something fell in front of me, making me gasp and jump back. In front of me hung a shrunken head, with its mouth and eyes sewed shut. I heard a few snickering laughs behind me. I didn’t bother turning around to see who had done it. I just quickly grabbed what I needed, and shut it closed.
As I began walking towards my first class, Theresa and her little posse came down the hall laughing at something that wasn’t all that funny. They smirked at me as I passed them, but Theresa never passed up the chance to humiliate me.
“I take it you found your twin hanging around.” She laughed. I ignored her and continued towards the class room, just as the bell rang.
As usual the class room was noisy, and the other students didn’t give a damn about what the teacher was yelling at them. I sat down in my desk, resting my head on my fist while I stared out the window. There were some teens leaving the campus, not bothering to show up for class. Teachers were out there, trying to get kids into class. It was useless anyways.
