I woke up to the tapping on my door, my eyes slowly opening and yawning. I could hear my mom shouting at me through the door, and it took me a minute to realize what she was saying. Something about school, and questioning why my door was locked? I sat up slowly and looked at my door.

“Raven, you better answer me! Open this door right now!” Mom shouted. Suddenly the memory of yesterday shot back into my head. My fight with Theresa, going to the mall, then my fight with Nichole, and then Francesca’s job offer. I jumped out of bed and quickly went over to unlock my door.

“So sorry.” I sputtered. Mom looked irritated. She stepped inside my room and looked around, before turning back to me.

“Why was your door locked?” she asked. I remembered back to last night and I had that nightmare again. The one where I relived the day I got my scar. I kept thinking Nichole or something would come in and finish me off, so I locked my door. Yes, I know I was being really paranoid.

“Sorry, I had a bad dream.” I said, while pushing my hair out of my face. Mom’s eyes dropped and gazed at the left side of my face. Her hard expression turned soft and upset. I looked away so she would stop staring at my scar.

“You are definitely going to be late for school.” Mom said, rushing over to my closet to help me get dressed. Then I remembered that I had totally forgotten to tell her about my suspension.

“I can’t go to school today.” I said. She spun around and looked at me questioningly. “I – I got suspended.” I said. Mom’s eyes went wide in shock, and she walked back over to me.

“How?” she asked, more curious than angry.

“I got into a fight with Theresa.” I said. Then her expression turned back to pissed as hell. She crossed her arms, and glared at me. Man, if looks could kill.

“You got into a fight.” Mom said, not questioning it. “I don’t know what’s worse, that you got suspended for getting into a fight, or the fact that you waited until now to tell me.” She said. I looked down at my feet, and rubbed my arm like I always did when I felt bad about something.

“I’m sorry.” I said. Mom let out a rough laugh.

“Sorry?” she asked, but then sighed. “What could have been so horrible that you had to throw punches?” she asked. I looked up a little, but not at her.

“She burned Uncle Devin’s picture, and laughed.” I said. Mom made a noise that almost sounded like a growl.

“A fight over a damn picture? I could have given you another one Raven.” She said. My head snapped up to look at her. I could feel the anger build up inside of me.

“I love that one! I don’t want another picture!” I shouted.

“Why?”

“Because that was the one he gave me!” I exclaimed. Mom’s eyes went back to their nurturing and gentle color, and I could see that she understood.

“Is there anything else you need to tell me?” she asked. I nodded, and she sighed.

“You need to call and talk to my principal.” I said. Mom nodded, and let her arms drop back to her sides.
