Ellie's POV:
In the morning, I awoke early. I went into the barn and washed and brushed the horses, mucked the stalls, refilled their water, and fed them. I then realized my dad wasn't with me. I
walked inside and took off my boots. "Mom? Pa?" I called out.

I heard talking from upstairs and ran up. I walked into my parents room and saw my mother crying and my father sleeping. "What happened?" I asked, terrified. My mom took me into the hallway and shut the door so we didn't wake my dad.

"I'm not sure how much longer your dad has....maybe a week or two..." She sobbed. I burst out crying. "What happened to him???!!!!" I screamed. "Hun...he's ill. He's been ill for a while but it's worse..." She hugged me tightly.

-later-

Some time has passed. Pa didn't even survive the first week like my mom said. His funerals today. We're burying him in the backyard.

At his funeral, it was just my mom and I. We prayed and eventually went back inside and sat at the kitchen table. "How are we going to hunt and do work around the house and barn?" I asked shakily. After a while, my mom responded. "I think we have to hire a farmhand." She choked on her own words.
