Chapter Twelve: Surprise

It has been three years since (Y/N) had last met Goten and Trunks physcially. She was now thirteen, Goten was sixteen, and Trunks was seventeen. Every time she called home, they were never around. Her mom told her that they were both busy and would call her back later. But they never did. She did not tell her mother, though.

She was now seated in Literature class, trying to concentrate. She and Dan were best friends, and she made some more new friends along the way too.

Something poked her from the side, and she saw that it was a note. Quickly, she slid the paper underneath her notebook before opening it. It read:

Have you gotten a date for the Valentine's Day dance yet? - Dan

Their school, Westchester Middle School, hosted a Valentine's Day dance every year on Valentine's Day. (YN) had never attended it, mainly because she did not have a date.

Quickly, she scribbled her response back before tossing it over to Dan's table, which was next to hers on the left:

No, why?

Dan was writing notes. Without looking at the note, his left hand made its way towards it and grabbed it. He opened the note and read it silently before writing his answer then tossing it over to her desk.

She opened the note and it read:

Well, I don't have a date, and I was hoping if you'd like to go with me? I sorta have a crush on you since we first met.

Her eyes widened in disbelief. He had a crush on her? Shr crushed the piece of paper before placing it into her jean pocket.

After class, (Y/N) packed her things up as Dan walked up to her awkwardly. There was a moment of silence before he broke it by asking, "So... what's your answer?"

She looked at him and said quietly, "No. Gomen'nasai."

(If you didn't know, "gomen'nasai" means "sorry" in Japanese. I did my research. 😂)

"No, it's fine, really," he said as he forced a smile, "I totally understand."

"It's not that I don't want to go with you," she said, "I just... I don't know. You're a good friend, and that's what I think of you. I - "

She was about to say "I have a crush on someone else" before she stopped herself in mid-sentence then quickly covering up by saying, "It's just me. That's all."

***

She headed home and went upstairs to her room. She placed her bag down on the carpeted floor of her bedroom and rubbed her temples. Suddenly, there was a tap on her sliding glass door.

Could it be Goten?

She shook her head as if to clear old dreams away. What was she thinking? There was no way Goten would have time to visit her.

The tap came again, then a voice said, "(Y/N). It's me."

She jumped and turned her head. A boy with black spiky hair with onyx eyes and fair skin stood there with a big smile on his face. He wore a green and yellow shirt that said "Goten Son" and blue jeans.

"Goten?!" she sputtered in shock.

"The one and only," he said with his iconic smile.

She opened the sliding glass door and he walked in.

"It's so good to see you after three years!" he exclaimed as he wrapped his arms around her waist, hugging her tightly.

She blushed slightly as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

"It's good to see you too," she whispered.

As he pulled away, her smile turned into a frown.

"Where were you?! What were you doing?! Why didn't you call back?!" she pratically shouted in anger.

Goten's eyes widened, afraid of the impending disaster.

"Geez, I'm sorry..." he mumbled sheepishly, "I was just..."

He stopped mid-sentence before blushing slightly.

"You were just what?" she asked with a hint of anger in her voice.

"Never mind," he mumbled, looking away while blushing.

She let out a sigh and thrn smiled before saying, "It's good to see you after a while."

Goten looked at her and smiled before saying, "Same here."

(Y/N) spent the rest of the day talking to Goten. The duo told each other how their current life was, when (Y/N) told him about the Valentine's Day dance thing.

"So, remember Dan?" she asked.

He nodded.

"He asked me to be his date," she said, "But I said no. Even though it is stated that you could get friends from other schools to be your date, I don't know anyone. And that means I won't go to the dance this year again..."

She let her voice trail off, and she just stared vacantly to her right, through the sliding glass door.

"Well... then... um..." he stuttered, not sure how to ask her the question.

She looked at him.

"Can I go with you as your date?" he blurted out, blushing profusely.

She stared at him. She was shocked, yet elated.

"Ever since we were kids, I've had a little crush on you," he explained, blushing darkly, "As we grew older, my crush towards you grew as well."

He looked at her hopefully before asking, "Will you be my date?"

She grinned from ear to ear and said, "Sure!"

She embraced him and he hugged back.
